Franken raised $1.3 million in first quarter

Minnesota Senate candidate Al Franken, a Democrat, announced today his campaign had raised more than $1.3 million in the first quarter of the year, finishing the period with over $1 million in the bank.

Franken, a former "Saturday Night Live'' performer and more recently a liberal radio talk show host, raised the money since announcing his candidacy on Feb. 14.

The campaign is still finalizing its numbers. The filing deadline is April 15.

Franken and fellow Democrat Mike Ciresi are hoping to take on GOP Sen. Norm Coleman, although Ciresi has not yet filed a statement of candidacy. Coleman's campaign did not immediately respond to requests for fundraising numbers.

Franken spokesman Andy Barr said the campaign was "thrilled'' with the totals.

"We've known for some time now that people are excited about Al's candidacy, and our fundraising success confirms that,'' he said in a prepared statement.

Great, I’ll bet that $1.3 million is all low hanging fruit stuff. Looks fine on paper, but it’s most likely from a smattering of a few donors. My bet is most of these donors are also not MN residents.

I was going to say that he probably stole most of it from a children’s charity, but I see Holicheese beat me to it.

For a Senate candidate 18 months from election?
It’s respectable. This will be a tough race.

Not surprising he could raise money easily. Look at the free help he has already gotten from David Letterman’s non-funny show. Plus he will no doubt continue to get millions in free ads and campaign help from the “entertainment” media. Coleman already starts off with a disadvantage.

Franken Says Kyoto Protocols Would Help Economy

Former radio talk show host and Democratic Senatorial candidate from Minnesota, Al Franken, says that rejecting the Kyoto Protocols was “one of the dumbest things that this president has done.” (Actually, the Protocols were rejected by the U.S. Senate in 1997 by a lopsided 95–0 vote.)

Franken discounted arguments that the economic impact of abiding by the Kyoto agreement would be ruinous to our economy. “Bush would have us believe that increasing government controls on economic activity is bad for the economy,” Franken said. “But I ask you, who is better suited to know what’s best for the economy: private businesses or the government?”

Adherence to the Kyoto Protocols will be easy and economically stimulating, Franken contended. “The solution is simple, we’ll all buy carbon offsets from Al Gore’s company,” Franken suggested. “Not only will we reduce global warming, we will also be contributing to a dynamic new, high-tech industry, creating jobs, and validating the leadership genius of the man who really was elected president in 2000.”

In related news, former Vice President Al Gore is reportedly entertaining offers to run for president as the candidate of the Green Party. “As the world’s leading spokesman for the environment, it’s only natural that the Green Party would want me as their nominee,” Gore said. “I’m good enough, smart enough, and people like me. The question is whether the world can afford to wait until 2009 for me to take charge. By then it may be too late to save the planet.”
