(4/03/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - A southeast Houston homeowner opened fire on a suspected burglar this morning -- a man who police say turned out to be one of his own neighbors.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It happened near Avenue H and 76th Street when Bob Manross, 77, was watching television. He heard noises coming from the boats he has in his front yard and when he went to investigate, he heard a loud crash. He then found his 17-year-old neighbor dressed in black standing in his kitchen holding a pistol.

The suspect demanded money from Manross. Manross told him it was in another room, so the suspect waited while his elderly neighbor went to another part of the house. But instead of cash, Manross grabbed a rifle.

"I got my rifle, I cocked it, and I came back to the door before going to the kitchen," Manross told us. "And there he was standing in the door and I shot him right in the middle."

Manross said he had time to reload and shoot more if he wanted to, but he didn't. The suspect, only identified as a 17-year-old Hispanic male, fled the scene and was taken into custody two doors down when police found him lying on his couch.

The suspect was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he underwent surgery. We're told he will survive. There's no word of any charges. Manross and his wife, who was also home at the time, were not hurt. (Copyright © 2007, KTRK-TV)

What an idiot burglar...he waits while the ‘victim’ leaves his sight to get ‘money’ and blows the burglar away.

I’ve never burgled anyone, but if I was going to I sure wouldn’t let him out of my sight.

But, according to the title of this story, a belligerent gun freak shot a young child who may have wandered into the wrong house.

Some kids just have to learn the hard way. I’m thankful this man wasn’t injured. Hope the kid has learned a lesson.

Once again the pertinent details are missing:

What gauge did he use? How much was the crosswind? How many points was this buck? What sort of deer urine did he use to attract him?

Not the smartest criminal around. One can only hope that his injuries include sterility so he cannot pollute the gene pool.

I had that thought, too. If you are going to rob somebody, at least read the robbing manual first.

Yeah, I picked up on that too. I can see it now:

Crook: Gimme your money!

Victim: OK. Whatever you say. It's, uh, in the other room...
Crook: Fine, I'll wait here.
Victim: (snickering to self) Moron...

Something very similar happened here last month or so. Two drunk girls who were partying out in the middle of nowhere found a nearby house in a search of a bathroom(or so they say). The occupant heard the girls, thinking they were robberies, shot them both dead.

The kid was Hispanic. Shouldn’t there be something in there about this being further evidence of illegal oppression of Hispanics, and that if Congress would pass a measure granting a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants incidents like this would not occur?
