McLean, Va. (AP) -- Congressional critics of President Bush's Iraq policy "seem to be rooting for failure," former White House chief of staff Andrew Card said Tuesday.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Card said lawmakers' efforts to mandate withdrawal timelines and threats to cut funding go beyond the scope of their duties. And he blamed critics in both parties for putting a negative slant on the war.
"We should be rooting for success," Card said. "I'm very upset that I see many of his critics, who are partisans, Republicans or Democrats, who seem to be rooting for failure. You know, they don't like his plan, therefore they want it to fail."
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has said he would try to eliminate money for the war if Bush rejects Congress' proposal to set a deadline to end combat. Besides Reid, Card said, "there are several of them who are getting in the way of the president's plans being implemented."
"Their job is to fund it, provide policy guidance through laws, but they're not supposed to be the tacticians," Card said. "I find that far too many members of Congress are trying to be tacticians."
Card rejected any talk that Bush is too secluded as a leader and rarely hears opposing viewpoints.

PING
Stop beating around the bush GOP, call them out for what they are. Hilary Clinton, Reid, Pelosi, et al give a rat's rear about the war the mideast or terrorism. they seek to destroy the military and our foreign policy so they can assume power on the ash heap. Just say it.
They wish chaos, civil war and a brutal islamic theocracy on 27 million people because they hate one man.
BTT!
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Many of these people hate the President so much, that they prefer a terrorist win to success by the United States.
The Associated Press bothering to print this is even more surprising. You would think they'd be looking for every Bush-hater under every rock these days.
While good to hear, dont ever forget that Andy is one of the main Rinos whose advice helped cripple this president on many issues.
Saying the truth would be a lot more helpful if said while they’re still in office instead of the constant patronizing.
Should have been doing so for the past four years.
The nitwits in Congress will wet themselves whent he terrorists go after them again
Thanks for the ping sleuth! Thank you Andy Card!
Excellent post! I agree...JUST SAY IT!!!
Frankly, I’m a little tired of hearing this continually from Republicans. I can’t make a case for Democrats EVER being on the up and up about ANYTHING, but it’s disingenuous to say that they are “rooting for failure”. (Whatever does ANYONE expect from partisan politics, ESPECIALLY from Democrats???) when what reaches us about the war effort is portrayed continually as sodiscouraging and disheartening, and the negative reporting allowed to go unanswered for way too long from this Administration. If Bush and Co. had EVER considered it necessary to SELL the war effort, and counter every Dem/Lefty claim and dishonest smear, there would be lots more support, lots more information OUT THERE OPEN FOR DEBATE, and it would never have come to this, with this tiresome “they want us to lose”. Preaching to the choir is what it’s called, and they really should broaden their repertoire. This wheel-spinning convinces no one who is not already convinced, and stuck on stupid in the rhetorical partisan morass.
ANd having just said all that, here is another way it works, and in its way, its as disingenuous as the Democrats. IF in long or short term the war in Iraq is eventually judged to be a failure by “History, then that failure will be AND IS DESIGNED TO BE seen as wholly the Democrat’s fault, because of their backing out, their criticism, their Bush-hating, their cowardice, their anti-Americanism, etc etc. Bush and his Administration are therefore considered BLAMELESS for any failing, any misconception, any screwed-up tactic or strategy, any missed opportunity, any short-term or long-term short-sightedness,etc. This is all highly debatable, as they say, but it does NOTHING one way or the other to advance our cause. The BIGGEST and most TRAGICALLY REGRETTABLE failing of the Administration is that has not deemed it necessary to inform the American people about the real successes of this effort, whatever they are. That may have helped mitigate the war-weariness that inevitably settles in after a few years, and convinces larger and larger numbers of people that , once again, war is “not worth it”.
Well, supreme, it looks like you’re the only one on this thread who feels that way.....
You’ve figured all this out already Andy?
