MI5 ADOPTS PAEDOPHILE-TRACKING TACTICS FOR MUSLIM EXTREMISTS

Michael Evans, Defence Editor The Times April 16, 2007

MI5 is adopting tactics used by the police to keep tabs on paedophiles and other sex offenders to monitor the activities of known or suspected Islamic extremists, The Times has learnt.

The threat from radicalised young Muslims is growing at such a rate that MI5 has realised that it needs the help of police officers on the streets to help it keep a check on extremists in their areas.

The police keep track of known paedophiles by collating sightings of them and noting whom they meet and which areas they frequent - a tactic that MI5 sees as ideal for keeping track of the movements of Islamic extremists.

Thousands of police officers on the beat in areas with large Pakistani communities - such as Birmingham, Leeds and London - will be expected to keep a lookout for young Muslims known to have become radicals.

The information gathered from day-to-day observations will be used to compile a comprehensive database of lower-level extremism. This register will help both MI5 and the police.

Bomb Damages School in Gaza with U.S. Ties

A dozen masked Palestinians bombed and set fire to the American International School in Beit Lahiya, north of Gaza City, before dawn on Saturday, causing extensive damage. Palestinian officials said that the attackers, believed to be Islamic extremists subscribing to the ideology of al-Qaeda, placed several explosive devices at the school. Two night guards said the militants tied their hands. One of the guards, Atef al-Beheisi, said the masked men told him, “We are the organization of Al-Qaeda in Palestine, and our swords will be directed at the throats of the infidels.” The second guard said the intruders identified themselves to him as being part of the “Army of Islam.” The school received $160,000 this year from the State Department to finance scholarships.

I was out pruning the rose bushes this morning.

Obviously, the “bride” in the next story will not be finding the time to smell the roses.

Ali Waked - 04.18.07

Israeli paratroopers arrested 19-year-old Najwa Hashash in the Nablus refugee camp of Balata on Monday night following suspicions that she intended to carry out a suicide bombing.

For three weeks now rumors have circulated the refugee camp regarding her intentions and Hashash was even taken in for questioning by Palestinian security forces but was released several hours later. On Monday, she was arrested by the IDF and military sources say that she is currently being questioned for her involvement in a planned attack.

“Catarino Piedra, 41, kept a gun underneath the counter at the Coliseum Pizza and Taqueria that he owned in East Oakland because his drivers had been robbed many times while making deliveries.”

“There is definitely a balance,” said Officer Roland Holmgren, department spokesman. “This thing had potential — who knows where the suspects were going to take the situation? But by no stretch of the imagination are we agreeing with or justifying what the owner did.”

Holmgren said, “We’re not saying that we want citizens to go out there and arm themselves and take the law into their own hands. We want citizens to be good witnesses, to be good report-takers and to identify suspects.”

Taliban Leader Killed in Air Strike; Two Militants Detained

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 23, 2007 – Coalition aircraft killed a key northeastern Taliban leader during an air strike April 20 in the Alishang district of Laghman province, Afghanistan, military officials reported.

Fateh Gul Haqparast, an important militant organizer and leader with extensive ties to the Hekmatyar Gulbuddin network and Taliban extremists, died during the U.S. Air Force strikes, officials said.

Coalition sources described Haqparast as a significant regional Taliban leader involved in assassinations, improvised-explosive-device attacks and assaults on Afghan and coalition facilities in Laghman and Kapisa provinces. The militant leader orchestrated attacks against the Mehtar Lam Provincial Reconstruction Team and the Alishang District Center, as well as bombings of civilian and military targets.

Provincial political leaders said the strike will enhance regional security. “The killing of this person is very good for the people of Laghman and for progress in our province,” said Gov. Gulab Mangal. “This will help Laghman become a better place.”

“This strike marks the sixth senior insurgent leader killed or captured in Laghman province in the past three months,” added Army Maj. Stephen Grabski, operations officer for 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. “The people of Laghman are clearly showing their intolerance for these insurgents through their actions in support of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Coalition forces will continue to support their actions to build their province and reduce enemy activity.”

In other news from Afghanistan, Afghan and coalition forces conducting an operation early today detained two suspected militants in the Paktika province. Credible information led the combined force to the compound suspected of sheltering weapons smugglers working for the Haqqani network. The smuggled weapons are suspected of being used against coalition forces and peaceful Afghans in the area.

During the operation, one inhabitant fled the compound and was soon apprehended by combined forces unharmed. The rest of the inhabitants complied with a request for peaceful surrender, and were not harmed.

ICE arrests 13 illegal workers at Bay Area packaging factory whose clients include U.S. military

Many employees used stolen Social Security numbers to obtain jobs
OAKLAND, Calif. - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents this morning arrested 13 foreign nationals who were working illegally at a Bay Area factory that makes packaging products for industry and agribusiness, including the U.S. military.

Seven of the 13 Eagle Bag employees taken into custody today used valid social security numbers belonging to others in order to obtain their jobs.

Today’s enforcement action targeted unauthorized alien workers at the plant operated by the Eagle Bag Corporation in Oakland. The company, which manufactures a variety of specialty packaging products, supplies sand bags to the military and bags used by the U.S. government for food distribution to Third World countries.

The 13 workers taken into custody were identified after ICE agents audited Eagle Bag’s employment records. The audit revealed that 47 of the company’s more than 70 employees submitted counterfeit immigration documents bearing fraudulent alien registration numbers to obtain their jobs. In addition, ICE agents determined 33 of Eagle Bag’s illegal workers were using stolen social security numbers.

ICE agents emphasize that Eagle Bag Corporation sought to comply with current hiring laws and is not facing any charges related to the worksite probe at this time. Meanwhile, ICE agents are continuing to investigate the illegal alien employees to determine whether any of them will face federal prosecution for aggravated identity theft, a violation that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in prison.

“This investigation provides yet another example of a disturbing trend - the identities of U.S. citizens are increasingly being hijacked by criminal organizations who sell them to aliens seeking to illegally gain employment in this country,” said Charles DeMore, special agent in charge of the ICE Office of Investigations in San Francisco. “Combating this burgeoning identity theft problem is one of ICE’s highest priorities.”

The workers arrested today are being held on administrative immigration violations while ICE continues its investigation. They were initially taken to ICE’s office in San Francisco to be interviewed, photographed and fingerprinted. Those who are not charged criminally will be voluntarily returned to their native countries or placed in immigration removal proceedings. All of the illegal workers are from Mexico.

During federal fiscal year 2006, ICE arrested 718 individuals on criminal charges in worksite investigations and apprehended another 3,667 illegal workers on immigration violations, a more than three-fold increase compared to 2005.
