It is somewhat active which is not surprising since it's the time of the FULL MOON. Ignore the expert who says there is no correlation.

Ignore why?

So when the Vanuatu quake happened as far from a new or full moon as one could get, why weren't you around prattling about moon phase-earthquake correlations?

I've always believed that the phases of the moon do indeed impact many things; earthquakes included.

My oldest daughter lives in Eagle River outside of Anchorage and she says they get several small ones every day.

I believe the phase of the moon affects the Nenana Ice Classic. My pick below, if I were to buy a ticket.

I hear ya! Sometimes that sounds and feels just like a quake. Same with the ridgepole popping when the house starts warming up. And speaking of snow sliding off roofs, we helped ours along and our roofs is finally almost bare. It's 32 degrees here! I even sat in the sun on our balcony for awhile today. Ahhhh, spring is truly here. :)

Where is Al Gore when you him...why with his environmentally bloated ego he could probably stand like Superman and block the whole thing.

People believe a lot of things.

The overwhelming weight of carefuly statistical studies finds no moon phase correlation whatsoever, particularly with large quakes.

In certain circumstances (volcanoes, undersea spreading ridge quakes, etc.) there is a potentially statistically significant correlation with diurnal (daily) tides. The changes in stress from those are far greater than the changes in the sizes of tides around full and new moons (and the idea that there's something special about full moons as opposed to new moons and earthquakes is flat out silly.)

Basically, when you have a quake near a full moon, people start babbling about it being near a full moon. For any of the many large quakes nowhere near a full moon, the same people are silent.

Our son lives in Anchorage too. Quakes in Alaska are as common as snow in the winter and mosquitos in the summer. It's a daily occurence but most are small enough not to be felt. Our area rode out a 7.9 a few years ago along with hundreds and hundreds of aftershocks.

You know, I've never bought a ticket but I've thought about it every year. Is it too late to buy one? Maybe you should. You just might get lucky.

Various news reports of a yards-high tsunami and a tsunami traveling 200 meters inland in the Solomon Islands closer to the quake, with damage.

It's 32 here, too! I even put one of the raingutters up that I take down for the winter to avoid damage.

Well, my prediction, which is based on the phase of the moon and the late spring and global warming and one of local rabbits is already turning brown is out there. I haven't bought a ticket in years. Usually there are several winners, so winning isn't usually much. Better than a sharp stick in the eye, but not much.

"Foxnews has this at 7.8"

This is the kind of stuff FNC gets wrong. OK on politics but bogus on science and geography.
