I described it to my brother this way before I even read anything about it being prossibly related to statins. It's as if you had let yourself get out of shape then started a vigorous exercise routine...the soreness that usually comes from this type activity never goes away. I had attributed to 'old-age.' And, my knees would just collapse.
thanks....I've got my own lova and simvastatin story....measuring lova LDL/HDL it didn't do much, but gave me the discomfort you describe......simva has gotten LDL to 60ish, but HDL is in the basement.....trying niaspan right now in hopes of getting HDL back up to above LDL like it supposedly needs to be.
In general, all of my legs and arms feel the morning after of a day of working real hard - sore and tremulous, not anything like agony.....upper forearms kind of crampy, too, like I had been doing endless wrist-curls the day before. I noticed no diff when I switched from lova to simva except that it dropped the LDL so much. Friday is the 3rd wk of niaspan, and it makes no diff in muscles that I can tell.
I discovered that the varities of statins made through the use of aspirgilus (several members of this family of fungi produce statins) cause pain within a couple of weeks of a 5 mg daily pill. However, most of the same statins are made through chemical synthesis and I found I can quadruple the dose before having any myalgia, and it stops INSTANTLY (within a day) of ceasing taking them.
Although I reported this earlier, seems no one listened. You all should check out aspergilus in the production of many different drugs.
Your case is interesting. I've had 2 hip replacements (2001 and 2003) due to osteoarthristis. Taking Lovastatin, my cholesterol is OK (190), LDL's fine but I can't get my HDL up. The doctor recently put me on Niacin but I don't know what affect it's having yet until the next blood test.
The problem is my aches and pains, just like you described. My knees have been on fire and the right one occasionally gives out slightly. I've been blaming this on the arthritis, reflective pain from the hip replacements, and the cold and rain from the winter and spring, but the overall pain is beating me down. The aches have moved to my shoulders, right foot and a finger or two on my right hand. As a result, I've been hitting the Vicodins harder than ever.
The wife is tired of hearing me complain about my aches and pains and I'm tired of hearing myself bitch. This thread has me wondering if it's the statins?
