Gingrich decries bilingual ballots

By KASIE HUNT, Associated Press Writer 34 minutes ago

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich equated bilingual education Saturday with "the language of living in a ghetto" and mocked requirements that ballots be printed in multiple languages.

"The government should quit mandating that various documents be printed in any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly shows up" to vote, said Gingrich, who is considering seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. He made the comments in a speech to the National Federation of Republican Women.

"The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. ... We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto," Gingrich said to cheers from the crowd of more than 100.

"Citizenship requires passing a test on American history in English. If that's true, then we do not have to create ballots in any language except English," he said.

In the past, Gingrich has supported making English the nation's official language. He's also said all American children should learn English and that other languages should be secondary in schools.

In 1995, for example, he said bilingualism poses "long term dangers to the fabric of our nation" and that "allowing bilingualism to continue to grow is very dangerous."

You never respond to the points I make.

1. No previous presidents including REAGEN ever dealt with our Borders.

2. And there is a difference between "bashing "Bush and criticizing him.

Guess, its just easier to make stupid comments about my tagname. Wow...really smart. NOT.

I just don't see any reason for Bush "bashing".

HEAR HEAR

I have been here a long time and I love President Bush. I'll discuss the issue, if I disagree with the President (see Harriet Meir).

The basing here belongs to two political parties:

Republicans for accepting the cheap labor.

Demorats for accepting the minority vote for backing illegals.

My deal is this:

I want security. I can not track people the way the system is now. I want border security (North and South) and I want single points of entry where people are processed in. If we have to increase the amount of work visa for Mexico, then do it.

There was a politician (a American/India//Irish feller- er true American) running for office. He took a elephant and a mariachi band down to the border. He sat on it while the band played and nobody came.

You would think that a mariachi band and a elephant would have gotten some attention.

here is the story

Newt is right on the button with this.

Millions have been wasted in the Los Angeles school system trying bilingual education. They are still uneducated when they leave school...and not speaking English.

I have personally walked out of stores where I cannot hold a conversation with a clerk without a translator. I made sure they knew why I was leaving, also. I wasn't too polite about it during my exit, either. Whenever I can speak to a manager, I do so.

I agree with your points...your post is very articulate.

where are ALL the politicians ( except a VERY few) when it comes to illegals?

Perhaps what I object to with calling Bush on this issue is that it dilutes the fact that ALL of congress for decades have not done anything about this problem! If the focus is on Bush it avoids dealing with the problem. "Oh, if Bush would just crack down, this would be taken care of."
Thus we avoid the reality that NO ONE WANTS TO DO THIS! and so all the politicians can "hide".

Well, I must give Bush this: Going into the election he had the same stance as he does now. He hasn't wavered much at all on it. where are ALL the politicians ( except a VERY few) when it comes to illegals?

Hiding under their desk like yeller bellies. I don't think Congress has the courage to deal with this issue. This could be Congresses biggest sin in their history.

One of the liberals favorite tools used to destroy America is multi-culturalism. They'll fight tooth and nail over it.

1- To vote you must be a citizen.
2- To be a citizen you must demostrate some ability to use English.
3- Therefore, if you cannot read a simple ballot in English, you are most likely not a citizen.

The simple fact the AP and others are already in attack mode against Newt suggest they fear him.

Frankly it warms my heart to see someone on our side with a spine.

Newt's 100% right, as usual.

In a recent poll 50% of the electorate said they wouldn't vote for Hillary under any circumstances.

And that 50% has remained steady for about the last year and a half in several different polls. That means that in order to win Hillary would have to win the votes of EVERY voter willing to consider her candidacy. That's a pretty freakin' tall order.
