Bolivians join migrant rush - on cruise liner

Airline tickets to Spain were sold out for weeks, and the Atlantic Ocean was clearly too vast to cross in a fishing boat. So a group of 82 Bolivians tried a novel way to migrate to Europe: they took a luxury cruise. Paying up to €2,400 (£1,630) each for a berth on an ocean liner, the Bolivian group embarked in Brazil alongside well-heeled Argentine and Dutch passengers. But when the vessel reached its European stopovers of Tenerife, Cádiz and Valencia this week, police officers refused to let them on to Spanish soil. A spokesman for the Spanish interior ministry said immigration officials suspected they had come to reunite with family and find jobs.

Bolivians, who do not require tourist visas to enter Spain, have raced to enter the country. Some 4,000 have passed through Madrid's Barajas airport in the past 10 days. From tomorrow Bolivians will be required to apply for tourist visas.

It is past time that the "successful" world quit feeling guilty and recognize that the problems resulting in massive immigration are in the countries the immigrants are leaving.

It is past time the guilt-ridden lectures against the "rich" countries ended and the rotten-government corruption-induced "poverty" of the "poor" countries be acknowledged.

No amount of out-migration or aid will help most "poor" countries without changes in their governments, and often changes in their culture as well.
