WASHINGTON Three Republican members of the House of Representatives have co-sponsored a resolution calling on President Bush to provide notice of withdrawal from the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Reps. Virgil Goode of Virginia, Walter Jones of North Carolina and Gene Taylor of Mississippi introduced the bill, which has been referred to the House Subcommittee of Trade.
The trio objects to NAFTA because of the rising U.S. trade deficits with Canada and Mexico, the loss of American jobs, the safety threat posed by foreign truckers on U.S. highways and the security risks it has meant in increased crime and drugs and the potential for terrorist activity.
According to the Department of Labor, 1.8 million U.S. workers have applied for trade adjustment assistance as a result of jobs lost through NAFTA's implementation.
How refreshing it is to see that some of our elected representatives realize what these unconstitutional trade agreements are doing to America and they have backbone enough to do something about it. NAFTA, CAFTA, GATT and any other unconstitutional trade agreements are a threat to our sovereignty and should never have been signed to begin with. It's not just the trade deficits these trade agreements bring, but it's criminals, disease, gangs, terrorists, loss of jobs, etc., that are about to destroy our culture; our way of life, and all Bush wants to do is speed up the process to the destruction of America!
If only the United States withdrew from NAFTA: crime would not exist; disease would be eradicated; no one would do drugs, everyone would have a job, candy would fall like raindrops from the sky, and household chores would be performed by giant stalks of talking asparagus.
In the absence of free trade agreements, illegal immigration would not result? Yes, or no?
When launching into a screed, best not to begin with a declarative statement that is itself a logical fallacy.
Thank you!
IMHO, only the WOT is more important than this.
Maybe the GOP is about to take off the NAFTA-Neocon suicide belt that puts Bush at 35%.
Outstanding.
"If only the United States withdrew from NAFTA:"
WOW!, that was a Homer Simpson moment. LOL!
Illegal immigration has dramatically increased since the inception of NAFTA. The Chinese have undercut the entire deal and are in the process of using Mexican labor to gain further footholds in this part of the world.
Free markets are only as good or *bad* as their participants.
If NAFTA opponents spent as much time and energy on opposing illegal immigration as they do opposing trade agreements, I'd imagine they'd make a difference. The fact that they do not (or that they choose to dilute their efforts) is simply an indication (to me) that they fear illegal immigration less, and trade more.
I think of it the same way as people believing they can solve crime by banning guns.
"If NAFTA opponents spent as much time and energy on opposing illegal immigration as they do opposing trade agreements, I'd imagine they'd make a difference"
I agree. Until all countries, including Mexico and China, become worthy of *fair* trade agreements, they should be exempted. It makes no sense for American workers to take a hit because other countries want to manipulate agreements to their own advantage.
You frighten me sometimes.
