"Here is Dianne Feinstein not even a year ago whining and moaning about Carol Lam and here she is yesterday quoting a newspaper, USA Today, citing Carol Lam as one of the top three attorneys in the US for prosecution of illegal immigration cases."

Even if USA Today is accurate, it remains a fact without context. Lam is the US Attorney FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, a place with FAR MORE cases to deal with than any other jurisdiction. It's like the Illinois State's Attorney for Cook County bragging that he was among the top 3 in murder prosecutions in the State of Illinois!

If Carol Lam's numbers aren't THE BEST in this category, she SHOULD be fired.

Actually, Lam is the U.S. Attorney for the Southern DISTRICT of California, which includes only San Diego and Imperial Counties. Those two counties combined are a little larger than the city of Chicago. Cook County is much larger.

That being said, there are 5 U.S. Attorneys for regions near the Mexican border. Were what Feinstein claims actually true, being third out of five is average. Being average in prosecuting immigration cases simply isn't good enough. But Lam's immigration "deliverables" were last in a number of categories, and her office's record in prosecuting existing gun laws was abysmal.

By the way, Feinstein cared so much about the sub-par job Lam was doing in enforcing the immigration laws that her office DIRECTLY contacted Lam's office about it.

That's exactly how I read that letter, c.c. If my boss says I handle more telephone calls in a year than anyone else in the company, that doesn't mean that I handle them well.
