I don't think it's necessarily true that he "had to" be aware of an AR-15.

The hunters really are a breed apart from the sport shooters, especially the big game and high-end bird hunters. They spend their days thinking about Purdy shotguns with hand engraving and gold inlay, not "black guns". Varminting for them is an opportunity to check the minute of angle on their custom rifle.

Only reason I know is I started out in one world and moved to the other. My dad and husband are both Army, but they were in in the days of the full size battle rifle (the M-16 was despised when my husband was in in the early 70s, and from what he tells me it suffered from the usual early model year problems that plague any newly manufactured item.) Both of them favor the heavy barrel bolt action rifles in .30 cal and larger, with wood stocking (but glass bedding), although my dad has a lever action Win model 71. The only "black gun" we have is an FN-FAL, although we have a little 10/22 with a stainless barrel and black composite stocking.

I didn't know anything about the small caliber lightweight semi-autos until I took on a gun rights case for a local sport shooters association.

It does not surprise me at all that Zumbo could be this ignorant.

Nice post. I found your statements about the separate gun camps to be very interesting. Well-written, too.
