While food imports have soared about 50%, the number of FDA food-import inspectors has dropped about 20%, the agency says. Is your position that more government is the answer?

>>>Is your position that more government is the answer? If a private inspection service could be established with labeling, I would accept that. In general, I support market driven country of origin labeling. If there is a demand to know where the food product is from, then the market will provide that information. I think this would be very effective for items like fruits and vegetables.
With ingredients that make up a small part of a final product, that method would not likely be as effective. What would the country of origin be for the pet food? Also, with the result of a poor product leading to sickness and possibly death, caveat emptor may not be as effective as in the case of other consumer goods.
