I dreamed that the contaminated wheat gluten was due to a disgruntled employee in Alabama. When I first woke from the dream, I even knew the person's NAME. But I fell back to sleep and when I woke up for good, I couldn't remember the name. So I got up and tried to search online to see if any of this food had been made in Alabama, and I couldn't find any Alabama connection. (Tinfoil hat on: But what if the wheat gluten went through Alabama before it went to the food manufacturer in another state?)
Again, this was just a dream.
Just switch to Abady brand. Made for carnivores. Look them up online (they're in New York, look for "John Abady pet food")... then find a supplier near you.

The only problem I've ever heard anyone having with it is that the dog gets the runs because the human feeds too much. Abady is made for carnivores so it doesn't have a bunch of fillers, so you only feed 1/2 - 2/3 as much as you would feed your normal food. So if you normally feed your dog 3 cups of dry food per day, with Abady you only need to feed 1.5 - 2 cups per day. I mix it with warm water. Dogs love it.
Look them up online and find a supplier near you and have a box shipped to you. Try the 20 pound bag to start with to see how you like it. I put a German Shepherd on it who had suffered from allergies for years, and within 2 weeks, he stopped scratching, stopped losing his hair, and several other health improvements.
It's more expensive than commercial food, but not as much as it might seem since you feed less. And the money saved on Vet bills by having a healthy dog make up for it. If I had put that Shepherd on Abady years before, I would have saved a couple thousand in Vet bills.

What did you find out from the Vet about your dog?
This is one of the big reasons I chose Abady: It doesn't require freezing, it is a complete and balanced diet right out of the bag/box, and it's made for CARNIVORES, without fillers, without artificial preservatives, etc. So you do have to use it within 6 months because it doesn't have artificial preservatives. But essentially, Abady is "the next best thing to cooking for my dogs." I don't feed myself well - I'm single and live alone and don't cook for myself, so I knew I wouldn't cook for my dogs. With Abady, I know they are getting everything a carnivore needs, and I don't have to worry about whether I've "cooked" a balanced diet for them.

Incidently, be sure you always EMPTY the bin completely before adding the next bag of food. Or at least take out the kibble at the bottom of the bin, poor in the new food, then put the "bottom dregs" back on top of the new food. If you never empty the food from the bottom, it can spoil, so you may simply be feeding them spoiled food from the bottom of the bin that has been in there for over a year.
But also... a number of people are reporting problems while feeding Iams dry. I hesitate to say the Iams CAUSED the problems, because it's difficult to prove cause/effect, but it's just a caution that people are reporting health problems who happen to feed Iams dry (myself included).

And Arizona Carolyn, can you clarify for people whether or not they should feed their cats canned Tuna? I'm a dog person so I haven't done the research myself, but I've heard from a number of cat people and rescue people that cats shouldn't be fed tuna because of the mercury that is in tuna and that cats can't process the mercury out of their systems so it builds up to toxic levels in their systems. Can you clarify whether that is true or not for all the cat people reading this who want to know what to feed their cats. I've seen a number of people say they are just going to feed their cats tuna, and I didn't want to tell them not to without doing the appropriate research... but perhaps you already know the answer and can make a post to that effect. Thanks.
Just order a smaller size to start with to see how you and your pets like it. If it goes well, then order the larger sizes for a little better economy.

I have a 3 year old healthy cat and also an elderly cat with an abdominal mass that may be cancer. (I had the aspirate done and it didn't conclude anything and I didn't want to go with exploratory surgery at his age) Do you think it is safe for him? He's not eating as well as I would like and has a sensitive stomach, but right now I am supplementing with canned Science Diet a/d and w/d as well as lots of vitamins.
Anyway, I'm not a Vet, and I'm not a cat person, so I can't counsel you on either of those aspects. Having said that, I don't see how Abady could be unsafe just because he has a mass that may be cancer. You could certainly call Abady directly and ask to speak with a nutritional specialist, or someone with a veterinary background, or something along those lines... and ask them the question. I would think the main thing for your cat is finding a safe food that he will actually eat. I know cats can be picky, and obviously you want him to be happy and enjoy his food (especially if it turns out he has cancer). In general, if you do decide to try the Abady, I would recommend dividing up the amount he would get in a day and feeding him 6-8 very small meals throughout the first couple of days to give his stomach time to adjust to it since he has a sensitive stomach, rather than letting him eat a whole meal that may not sit well on his stomach. If his stomach isn't going to accept it, at least with a tiny meal, if he throws up it won't be very much, and if it goes beyond his stomach before he gets upset, it won't be very much food in his system that is upsetting him. Oh, when you call Abady, explain that he's old, has a sensitive stomach, tell them about the mass... and ask which of their products they recommend to start with. I used to have a local distributor who could answer all of these questions for me, so I only had to call the company directly one time - so I can't give you the name of a specific person to talk to. Just be sure to ask for the most knowledgable nutrition person so you get a good person right from the start. Also tell the specialist what you're feeding now, and specifically mention that you're giving supplements/vitamins. If your cat likes the Abady and does well on it, I think you'll be so happy, because as I said, it's a complete food and you won't have to do any supplements or anything (if all goes well, of course). Definitely keep me posted.

I'm sorry but I don't know! I have always gotten mine from a local distributor. Back when I first started ordering the company itself didn't have an online ordering system (only telephone), but I haven't used their website in a few years.

A) 30 dead in 1 state (Oregon) x 50 states = 1500 possible dead
B) If Oregon has 1% of the nation's population x 30 dead in Oregon = 3000 possible dead
We'll never know the true numbers.
Actually canned Tuna isn't the best thing for a cat... once in a while won't hurt, but sardines and hack mackeral are better choice (wash them first to rid a lot of the salt)... better to make a combo of ground up organ meats and beef heart... There is some really good books on cooking for your pets -- do and cat -- that I'd recommend or go to K9Kitchen at yahoo and work with Monica there to formulate a balanced diet...
I think you're right. just reading the beginning of this thread, how many people have not and are not reporting?
