Liberals : why is the GOP still heading for '08 ?
Time Magazine ^ | 03 29 2007 | drzz

Posted on 03/29/2007 9:02:28 AM PDT by drzz

Why, in poll after poll, including the new TIME poll, does that advantage seem to disappear whenever voters are asked to pick a president in hypothetical head-to-head match-ups among front-runners with solid name recognition. In our poll, Hillary Clinton loses to John McCain, 42-48%, and to Rudy Giuliani 41-50%. Even though Clinton maintains a 7% edge over Obama among Democratic respondents, Obama fares better in the general election match-ups. It's so close that it's a statistical dead-heat, but Obama still loses: 43-45% to McCain, 44-45% to Giuliani.

It's hard to know exactly why respondents who are generally unhappy towards — and in many cases fed up with — the GOP might still prefer a Republican for president over a Democrat. Much of it has to do with the individual candidates involved. In Clinton's case, as TIME pollster Mark Schulman points out, "with Hillary the Democratic front-runner, most voters have made up their minds about her, both pro and con. She may have limited upward potential against Republicans. The emerging anti-Hillaries, Obama and Edwards, suffer from low awareness at this point."

completely disregard their personal politcal feelings to vote for him?

What makes you think anyone would have to disregard personal feelings to vote for him. Geez, you just keep spewing the false premises today. No wonder you don't know anything bout fred politically.

Remember, these polls generally include only the responses of living, non-homeless, non-senile-dementia, non-illegal alien, non-imprisoned felon respondents. Therefore, many Democrat voters' are never included in these polls.

I'm a conservative. But I will vote for Giuliani if he is the Republican candidate. I can't imagine a current Dim that I could support.

I hope you don't get knocked for that, as you should not, but are you planning to support any real conservatives in the primary, or do Rudy's liberal positions and history suit you OK?

For sure he is not an unknown, but how many people are going to recognize him walking down the street. How much of the electorate watches Law and Order, and then like it so much that they completely disregard their personal politcal feelings to vote for him?

*************

I think you underestimate his exposure:

"Law & Order is an American television police procedural and legal drama set in New York City. Created by Dick Wolf, with award-winning theme music composed by Mike Post, the award-winning Law & Order is broadcast on the NBC network and syndicated on other US networks, as well as worldwide. The show is produced by NBC Universal Television Studio, formerly known as Universal Television and Studios USA.

Law & Order first appeared on the NBC network in the fall of 1990, and its success has resulted in the creation of additional shows under the Law & Order franchise. It is the longest-running primetime drama currently on American television.

The pilot episode was produced for CBS in 1988, but it never aired on that network. Instead, it aired as Episode 6 on NBC in 1990.[1]

Law & Order's seventeenth season on NBC began on Friday, September 22, 2006 at 10PM EST and will continue as an anchor of the network's Friday lineup; the show had aired on Wednesdays since 1992, and on Tuesdays before this. The series is broadcast in Canada on CTV. Reruns can be seen regularly each weeknight on TNT (U.S.) and weekdays (1PM) & weeknights (11PM) on Bravo! (Canada). It can be seen in the UK with new episodes first showing on the cable and satellite channel Sky One and later on Sky Two with a terrestrial airing on channel Five. The early seasons are being shown on the Hallmark Channel."

His character on the show is also extremely appealing.

"He's only two years older than Rudy. Why didn't he serve?"

I don't know. Maybe, like rudy, he was so vital to national security in his job as a law clerk that he couldn't be spared either!

Hey TIME, it's because you view this country as EVIL, as HORRIBLE, as WARMONGERING, AS THE OVER-ENTITLED ENEMY! You continuously do everything you can to view this country in a negative light and fortunately, there are still enough Americans out there who love this country and love our ideals, our successes, our past and have HOPE for our future. We do not want Socialism or liberalism and we still desire a country who will face danger head-on.

The Democrat Party has become simply this: an enemy of traditional American values and an enemy of the United States Constitution. You are more in line in your thinking with every dictatorial despot that exists today than you are with true Patriotic Americans. You raise the anti-war torch high, but only because you are not in power to take credit for the win. You ENJOY turning every one of America's successes around to use them as another reason why the rest of the world should hate us.

YOU FUEL THE WORLD'S HATE FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

When we get closer, and see who the candidates are, and they participate in debates, I'll make my primary choice. I like Newt; I think he's very smart. But he's not running yet. I enjoy Thompson's work as an actor (I'm in show biz), but I don't know a lot about him as a potential president. And he's not running yet. Hunter has fans on this site, and I will look at him. But so far he hasn't gained much traction. I have met Brownback, and I like him personally. Don't yet know if I'll back him if he is on the primary ballot here in CA.

I like Rudy because of his record in New York, the way he took down the Mob, stood up to the NY media baying hounds, and the fact that he gets the WOT.

It's still early.

And let's not forget, the real enemy is the Democrat Party.

Well, snark all you want, but it's a serious question. Thompson was in college and law school just ahead of Rudy.

Rudy was in the Air Force ROTC but couldn't fly because of an ear problem. And IIRC, he had a high draft number. So, yes, he got the deferments. We know that story.

But what's Fred's story?

If you support him (and I will if he wins the primary), don't be foolish enought to think I'm the only person who will ask this question.

It's not in any of his bios that I can Google up.

As I posted to flashbunny, it's a serious question. What I ultimately think about his answer will matter little.

But I'm not going to be the only one to ask. Better to answer it now than to have the MSM ask and answer it for you.

I agree with that and I'm not real keen at all on Rudy but the alternative goes without saying.

He was in law school and had three kids to support.

Then he worked as an assistant us attorney near the end of US involvement in vietnam.

Quite a bit of difference from being somebody's favorite law clerk.

:-)

Some of the posts on these political threads have degenerated into a lot of name-calling. In the "good old days," we at FR used to look down on deranged leftist sites like DU because of all the wild personal attacks. I hope, as we get closer to '08, the level of discourse on this forum will rise a bit.

I enjoy rhubarbs, donnybrooks and brouhahas, but it's always nice to have steak on the menu as well as sizzle.

You know, we can debate all day long whether or not D'Israeli, Harding, Coolidge and Churchill were conservatives and to what degrees. However, that doesn't change a thing.

What really matters is that Rudy Giuliani IS NOT A CONSERVATIVE. He is a pro-war liberal, just like Joe Lieberman, FDR or LBJ.

I know plenty at Thompson. But people use this Law and Order thing like somehow he was Michael in the Godfather or something. I dont really think that qualifies him as a candidate.
