Liberals : why is the GOP still heading for '08 ?
Time Magazine ^ | 03 29 2007 | drzz

Why, in poll after poll, including the new TIME poll, does that advantage seem to disappear whenever voters are asked to pick a president in hypothetical head-to-head match-ups among front-runners with solid name recognition. In our poll, Hillary Clinton loses to John McCain, 42-48%, and to Rudy Giuliani 41-50%. Even though Clinton maintains a 7% edge over Obama among Democratic respondents, Obama fares better in the general election match-ups. It's so close that it's a statistical dead-heat, but Obama still loses: 43-45% to McCain, 44-45% to Giuliani.

It's hard to know exactly why respondents who are generally unhappy towards — and in many cases fed up with — the GOP might still prefer a Republican for president over a Democrat. Much of it has to do with the individual candidates involved. In Clinton's case, as TIME pollster Mark Schulman points out, "with Hillary the Democratic front-runner, most voters have made up their minds about her, both pro and con. She may have limited upward potential against Republicans. The emerging anti-Hillaries, Obama and Edwards, suffer from low awareness at this point."

Churchill was a WARTIME leader, his leadership style during WWII was basically the same as FDR's. Do you propose to call every great wartime leader a "conservative." Conservativism as it succeeded under Reagan was about free market economics, low taxes, strong defense and social conservatism. Those principles were not used by Coolidge or Churchill.

"Fred Thompson is more electable than Giuliani or Clinton. Isn't that all that matters? "

Remember, "Only rudy can beat hillary" has been replaced by "Only Fred can beat hillary". Rudy has become obsolete.

Wow, you have successfully boiled down a wonderful, complex political ideology, into four policy positions. You are saying Benjamin D'Israeli and Warren Harding werent true conservatives leaders based on these 4 points?

Wow, that's pretty damning stuff. /s

It's not like he cheated on multiple wives, blew off his son's high school graduation, or learned of his daughters acceptance to Harvard through a newspaper article, though.

Besides, I'd rather a ladies man than a guy who promotes the homosexual agenda, and raises money for militant gay groups with ties to anti-war communist groups.

Also, Fred Thompson is more electable than Giuliani. Isn't that all that matters?

Being a mayor of a large city with a myriad of social issues cannot convince me he could be a CiC prosecuting a global multi front war on terror. He has zip military experience.

McCain is a certifiable nut case. He's unstable. Finally, he's unelectable.

Obama Hussien Barak will never darken the door of the Oval office as it's resident. His campaign will be DOA thanks to Clinton.

The Republicans have time to get behind a conservative that appeals to its base and pull in Reagan dems on the issues. It's the Republican's only hope.

Yes, educated voters can do that to be sure, but I say Rudy and McCain's positions are known only because they've been being talked about in the media for so long, feels like a year or so. Thompson has been around 2 weeks or so, much to my dislinking, and Im sure Rudy and McCains as well, the unknown Thompson is certainly getting some points in some polls which could very well indicate Rudy(or McCain for that matter) wont take. Im not convinced yet, like I said, I think this is a wake up call to the McCain campagin.

Hahaha I like your sarcasm. I dont understand how we can just assume Thompson is more electable yet than any other of the candidates, Ive seen no polling to indicate he can compete with Clinton or Obama. He looks the part of an inside the beltway type if there ever was one. Im not opposed to some other great candidate entering the race, I want the best guy we can get, but its not Thompson. At this point im with Rudy G.

Besides, I do not think a draft dodger will get many military votes, especially in a time of war.

What's Fred Thompson's military history?

Far from being unknown, Thompson is in fact a minor celebrity due to his work on Law and Order.

For sure he is not an unknown, but how many people are going to recognize him walking down the street. How much of the electorate watches Law and Order, and then like it so much that they completely disregard their personal politcal feelings to vote for him?

I'm a conservative. But I will vote for Giuliani if he is the Republican candidate. I can't imagine a current Dim that I could support.
