This support comes from a thin majority of Americans, with 51% of those polled in favor of sanctions and 26% opposed.

I assume this makes sense to whomever wrote it. It doesn't to me.

It would be a "thin majority" if, and only if, 49% were opposed.

That 23% have no opinion at all says a lot for their honesty, but not for their admitted ignorance.
