COSTA MESA - Throw your buddies in the trunk and break out the Milk Duds the drive-in movie theater, not seen in Orange County for a decade, is coming back.
The Star-Vu Drive-In, conceived by four entrepreneurs with a soft spot for outdoor movie-going, is set to open in May at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.
"All four of the people who are doing this are baby boomers, like me, who enjoyed drive-ins growing up," said Jill Lloyd, spokeswoman for Orange County Drive-In LLC, the company behind the endeavor.
Reflecting a nationwide trend, local drive-ins bit the dust in droves during recent decades, giving way variously to Wal-Marts, shopping centers and apartments.
At least 11 "ozoners," as aficionados lovingly call drive-ins, were built in Orange County beginning in 1941, later caving as real estate values soared. The last of the lot, Westminster's Highway 39 Drive-In, closed in 1997.
The medium's golden age was the late 1950s, when more than 4,000 drive-ins operated nationwide, according to the United Drive-In Theatre Owners Association. Now, fewer than 400 exist.

Cool. I have looked at this for a long time but the numbers never made it profitable because of government burden and neighbors that hated the noise and traffic fighting the permit process.
The fair grounds is a pretty good venue since it has lot of space however at the outdoor theater concerts have to stop early due to noise, I wonder if this is true with the drive-in.
I don't think society is civil enough to have these anymore. You just know there's gonna be some idiots with their big woofers booming away, and walking around talking crap.
if thats all they do they would be considered lucky. Wait till the "homies" decide rape, carjacking, robbery, and peso exchange *smiles* is easier to get away with.....then the people trying to make a quick buck with this idea, will come up with the typical response..."we had no idea we were setting up the public for a turkey shoot"
The drive in in my hometown never went out of business. He lives in the 'screen'. He also maintains a great playground for the kids. I love to see the little ones in their jammies at the drive-in! So nostalgic....
And then there was the time Richard parked right in front of the consession stand, and everybody was afraid to get out of the trunk!
Speaking of Richard! Did I ever tell you about the time he and I saw Donovan's Brain at the drive-in? Just at the spookiest part, he shouted and lunged at me! Damn near gave me a heart attack! Nancy Reagan was in that movie...
Off duty cops..

LOL! The good ol' days.
My boyfriend and I went to see "Psycho" at the drive-in. We were in a little convertible, and when the scary part(s) came, I jumped up so high I almost put a hole in the convertible top!
My wife and I were both born and raised in Orange County. For the past 17 years we lived within walking distance from where the drive-in is going to open, and for the past 7 or 8 years we have been talking about how great it would be if they brought back a Drive-in to O.C.
The Irony is we just moved to Texas. LOL :-(
I'll be glad to save two spots in the trunk next time you're in town. LOL
ha ha,, boo hoo... we got this one!

Yep, that was ONE of those scary moments! LOL
Janet Leigh said that she had nightmares and was scared to death to take showers after shooting that scene.
I would have gladly stood watch for her...Her daughter too.
I've had some memorable times there.
