Republican presidential hopeful Rudolph Giuliani on Tuesday called the Democratic-controlled Congress' challenge to President Bush's policy in Iraq "a terrible mistake" and equated it with waving a white flag in the war against terrorism.
"I can't imagine in the history of war anybody announcing a timetable to run out and retreat," he said at an appearance at a delicatessen in this suburb just over the George Washington Bridge from New York City. "I think it's a terrible mistake. To put up the white flag and announce a timetable for retreat seems like a very bad strategy to me."
Giuliani's remarks came on the heels of the U.S. Senate narrowly passing a nonbinding timeline that would have U.S. combat troops home by next March. President Bush is likely to veto the resolution.
"I hope that the president vetoes it," Giuliani said. "The full focus of our energies should be on supporting the troops that are there and trying to act against terrorism, trying to create an Iraq that acts as a bulwark against terrorism instead of a headquarters for terrorism."
He also didn't mince words when asked what he would do as president if Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continued to flirt with developing nuclear weapons.
"What I would do is make clear to him that he's not going to have nuclear weapons. That's not an option. Containment may have worked with the Soviets, but as far as I can recall, the Soviets weren't planning to come here and kill us. They didn't blow up the World Trade Center twice. We've got a different kind of enemy here. Ahmadinejad has to be clear that we're not going to let him move to the stage where he can have nuclear weapons."

Rudy gets it right for once..........and that is all that I like about the man, 9/11 aside.....
Actually, I'm a conservative. A very serious one. Unlike you.
Yes. These are very important considerations. They're quite rare qualities in major (or, probably, even minor) Republican leaders.
The logic from the liberal FReepers is mind-boggling, isn't it? Supporting Rudy now is completely putting the cart before the horse. These people are in favor of doing away with the primaries and electoral college too I bet.
You and your fellow Rudy supporters keep bringing this old canard out. How much do you REALLY believe in it? Do you honestly think that Rudy Giuliani is the ONLY Republican who has a chance at winning the general election? Note that the one who wins the Republican Primary will have instant name recognition and donations coming in out the wazoo, so the other canard about "electability" and "name recognition" goes out the window.
In fact, Rudy may be the only electable Republican. Maybe you don't realize how much power the Rats have in this country, how many idiots vote for them, including idiots who don't share their values. Didn't Kerry's near-victory (in much better circumstances for us) teach you anything?
"Doing away with?" A Rudy booster wants to "do away with" socons? Your rabid loathing has descended to the point that you make such a comment in a free society?
You have one thing right - we are lousy "comrades", you stinkin' fascist.
I recall how Ronald Reagan - someone far more conservative than Bush - carried 49 of 50 states.
And Kerry's near-victory is the point I keep bringing up of how dangerous it would be to elect Giuliani; if it came down to Giuliani vs. Any Democrat, who do you think the media will side with? The Democrat.
And then all of Rudy's baggage will be opened and spilled across America. And the people who do not possess critical thinking skills will see this baggage, and their image of Rudy will sour.
The Democrats tried the same tactic with Bush: a decades-old DUI charge. Can you imagine what they'd do to Giuliani?
Sounds like you're trying to shove your man's liberalism down our throats. Don't plan that parade just yet!
The enemy isn't moderate Republicans. It's RATS and Islamofascists.
And liberals posing as Republicans.
Or maybe you're afraid of them and would rather just attack fellow Republicans?
Afraid? You wish. Fellow Republicans? Grow a pair.
"Actually, I'm a conservative. A very serious one. Unlike you."
Suuurrrrre yooooooou arrrrrrrrrrre! [s'cuse me while I vomit]
Rudy won't split the Party, but little ole 'ultraSonic007' will!
LOL!
You da man, 007!!
Why don't you reason about this, instead of being a punk?
You may be a combat-tested Vietnam veteran, but that was 40 years ago, pal. Today your brains are mush.
Only "socons" like you. Most are far more intelligent.
How very nice of you to say.
Rudy would be proud, as I'm sure all of your comrades are.
How dare you.
You slander a Vietnam Veteran because he won't support Rudy?
HOW *^&$&^&*( DARE YOU?!
...sorry. Nothing ticks me off more than to see someone slander a faithful soldier. Second place would be a soldier selling out his comrades for political gain, a la Kerry.
But still...THAT WAS UNCALLED FOR.
Apologize. NOW.
