Not really if you read the entire story. He's clearly saying Thompson accidentally picked it up.

"We had three cars on Friday that were being moved about because of my trip, and that is probably a reason that this inadvertent situation developed. And that's really the extent to which I think I should be discussing. That's really all I can say," he said, adding that he couldn't talk about the case because of the legal proceedings and his desire not to prejudice the situation.

He's not saying Thompson took it from him, and he is actually admitting its his without saying it in those words. I don't blame him for the words he is using. Technically, by the letter of the law, he provided a gun to someone who could not legally carry or possess it. There are also questions about whether it still had to be registered in DC or not.

You don't really believe that the Constitution makes the Secret Service powerless to prevent people from carrying concealed firearms in the presence of the President, do you?

Do you?

Universal?
So, you can have a nuclear weapon in your basement?
The Constitution is a suicide pact?

Regardless of party this very well could be an honest mistake.

A mistake is misplacing your keys. Not your handgun.

The aide said Webb gave the bag that contained the gun to Thompson when the aide drove the senator to the airport.

Webb said he has been in New Orleans since Friday and returned Monday night. He denied that he gave the weapon to Thompson.

Well, well.... somebody is lying.

If he'd just slapped the Capitol Police officer he'd have gotten away with it.

Most people going to New Orleans should pack a side arm.

Richmond ping.

The Lt. Dan saga continues. I think Lt. Dan has thrown his aide under the bus. IIRC, this aide has been a friend and colleague for years. What a way to treat people you supposedly care about....

Guess it depends on the definition of the word "give". How Clintonian of him.

"I set the bags down, and said 'Gee, I wish these bags somehow could get to DC.' I didn't tell anyone to actually TAKE them, I was merely expressing a wish."

Of course he didn't give him the gun. He gave him the BAG that contained the gun. LOL. Webb is going to split hairs on this one.

I hope Webb goes down big time on this & we need to have a Senate investigation.

How many other Senators & Representatives think they are above the DC handgun ban?

It looks like Thompson is going to have to do a Webb Hubbell here.

Virginia Sen. Jim Webb said Tuesday he did not give aide Phillip Thompson the gun that led to his arrest in a Senate office building. Webb did not say whether it was his gun.

I suppose we're going to hear next that it depends upon what our meaning of the word "gun" is.

Hey, now we can have fun referring to it as Webb's Thompson Gun.

Regardless of party this very well could be an honest mistake.

There really is no other logical or plausible explanation. Nobody is going to knowingly run a bag with a gun in it through the X-Ray machine at the Capitol building.

To me, all it comes down to is the question to whether Webb was illegally possessing a gun in DC.

Yep. Well put.
In fact, this whole thing sounds to me like Webb wanted to take have his gun but figured he would let Thompson take the (unknown to Thompson) risk of smuggling it. Nice guy.

My favorite quote from the article:But Webb did not shoot down rumors that he carries a gun in the Capitol complex. "I believe that it's important - it's important for me, personally, and for a lot of people in the situation that I'm in, to be able to defend myself and my family," Webb said. "

Isn't he special?
