Actor Jeremy Piven has reportedly been banned from America's Nobu restaurants after paying a waiter's tip with a DVD. The Old School star was dining at celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa's restaurant in Aspen, Colorado during the recent Us Comedy Arts Festival. When the bill came, Piven paid up and left the waiter a copy of his Entourage series DVD as a tip. The outraged server threw the DVD at the celebrity diner. A fellow diner tells the New York Daily News, "He (Piven) came in with a large group of 12 or more without reservations and asked for a table. It was a very busy night, but a table, although cramped, was provided. On his way out, he made a nasty comment to the manager: 'Thanks for nothing.'" The actor was later advised to steer clear of all Nobu restaurants. But Piven is playing down the incident in Aspen: "I'm such a fan of Nobu and all of his restaurants. I had a great dinner at the Nobu in Aspen. As always, the meal was excellent and the service was great."
I would pay big bucks to see a video of the server throwing the DVD at Piven.
Look I'm a fairly large tipper but no one is required to leave a tip and this waiter probably didn't deserve one. Who the heck is Jeremy Piven?
That's funny, but it's inexcusable. Servers rely on tips because they don't make a lot of money to begin with, as you know. Also, servers share a part of their tips with the bus boys, thus if a server gets a bad tip, or no tip, he's basically in the hole.
Where are you getting that?
I'm betting he always was a jerk.

Just a guess.
Never heard of him. Never heard of his show. Never heard of the restaurant.
He's from the Chicago area, too. He was a jerk long before he was famous.
That would be funny, since one of his first roles was Ellen's friend on her sitcom. But I've read the opposite, that he's a manwhore.
If I showed up @ a restaurant w/ 12 people and no reservation -- I'd not only tip well, but I'd most likely forgive the staff if the service was not quite up to par.
bump for later read
Let's see, a party of 12 at Nobu. Conservatively, the bill was at least $1,200, and the arrogant prick leaves a DVD for a tip. They want to ban Piven from Nobu. I'm not hearing that the waiter got fired.
Well, I've never seen you before, but I have no burning desire to let everyone know about it.
I know lots of people think we should tip, I don't, and I applaud this guy for leaving a DVD, maybe the service was terrible, maybe he just didn't want to be robbed beyond the exorbitant price this restaurant charges for meals. Either way it is his right and for a server to get mad because he wasn't tipped is pure BS.
I'm with you. People who do fine dining will call a manager before going an entire meal with service which is unworthy of a tip on a $1000 check.
f I showed up @ a restaurant w/ 12 people and no reservation -- I'd not only tip well, but I'd most likely forgive the staff if the service was not quite up to par."
Thank you.
That is the first part of this whole story that requires common sense.
I am glad that he and his arrogance have been banned from the chain of restaurants.
He better learn to cook at home if he is going to continue down this path.
I have had occasions when large groups want to go eat in a rather spontaneous fashion, and I have made sure that we overtipped for the total inconvenience of the evening, regardless of the restaurant.
