Liver cancer is a primary malignancy (tumor) that started in the liver. Metastatic cancer is cancer that started someplace else (in this case the colon) and then traveled to another location, sometimes via the lymph system, sometimes via the bloodstream etc. Metastatic cancer is a huge problem because it means the cancer is no longer locally contained and could be in dozens or more places.
