Dems Looking for Source of Troubles? Try a Mirror
Commentary by Betty Arenson
Monday March 26, 2007
The Democrats who were so hungry for power and proliferate with promises to make things better for the United States continue to fall short and disappoint us.
We were promised an end to corruption and deception. However, we still have Rep. William Jefferson remaining unscathed in his House seat while the issue of his $100,000 bribe languishes. He was caught on tape, red-handed, taking the bribe, and the money was found in his home freezer. Everyone is completely mute on the subject.
Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi couldn't wait to get a minimum wage bill passed. Unfortunately for her, it was quickly discovered that she exempted a large corporation in her home town of San Francisco (with manufacturing off-shore) from having to pay said wage.
While we don't know of the pure existence or extent of illegalities, House Majority Leader Harry Reid made $1 million or so on some land deal he was tipped off to in advance of its development.
Close to that subject, and in the vein of "questionable" and certainly reprehensible, presidential contender John Edwards cleverly took several millions of dollars in dividends from his law corporation that seemingly allowed him to skirt paying nearly $600,000 in Medicare moneys. Since Medicare is about 1 percent of gross salary, that must have been quite some pay. Further, if $600,000 represents just Medicare at 1 percent, did he also skirt the larger payment of Social Security, which is about six times the amount of Medicare? That is a question worth having answered when we have a candidate who professes to detest the "two Americas; one for the rich and one for the poor."
Pelosi is not denouncing or investigating such tactics.
The high price of gas was supposed to be the fault of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Now we have oil at a price between $50 and $56 per barrel, with gasoline in California back to an excess of $3 a gallon. Democrats are not investigating that or helping the American people.
San Fran Nan made a lot of promises of major changes in the first 100 hours of the new Democratic rule. Nothing materialized. They are failing miserably at even getting a start at accomplishing what Republicans did with a small majority in the first 100 days of 1994 with their newly acquired small majority in Congress.
Democrats have defined and redefined the mantra of "reaching across the aisle" to a new stratosphere far past the n'th degree. They just omitted implementing the action with their regained power and thus have failed to come close to garnering any accomplishments.
There is one exception to the unfulfilled promises issue.
Democrats have and are actually following through with one area of promise - and that is the steadfastness to investigate everything that could appear to be touched by Republicans, irrespective of the lack of importance, cost or waste of time.
As soon as Scooter Libby was convicted and Valerie Plame got to weep and tell her pseudo-heartbreaking story to Congress, even some of the liberal media said it was tiresome and a waste of time and money. They were quite late with their assessment.
As one former Justice Department attorney, who helped write the legal definition of "covert," clearly stated to liberal commentator Alan Colmes, Valerie Plame was not a covert agent. Plame worked at a desk job for at least the prior five years.
Plame's own husband exploited her with his reference to "my CIA wife" in a book he authored. Plame was as covert in 2005 as I was.
Now we have the "investigation" into the dismissal of eight federal attorneys. Every other president has had the unfettered ability to rid the department of the same attorneys, at will, but suddenly when the Bush administration does it, there is a problem.
These attorneys are appointed by the president and can be dismissed by the president. Period. Bill Clinton fired 93 of the department's 94 attorneys - and it didn't cause a blip on the radar screen. -
Republicans are held at fault for even addressing the matter past the explanation of the dismissals being within a president's authority and nothing new. The administration erred in trying to justify something that does not warrant any justification. The critics do not deserve the address. The appropriate and correct response is, "We did it with due presidential authority, its nothing new or different. End of subject." Kowtowing to silly Democrats and wimpy Republicans is simply unnecessary.
The investigations are just beginning. If the moon changes by any degree whatsoever, it will be the Bush administration's fault. As long as such witch hunts continue, Democrats do not have to do anything to benefit the American people. Our lives will be bettered in no way at all.
We have a war that many criticize, but there are no solutions offered except the debate and passing of a useless resolution along with a sentiment to "bring the troops home." When Democrats had a chance to actually vote to leave Iraq, they wouldn't do it - but they still "talk" about it.
Social Security is on a path to destruction. Politicians have spent and continue to spend every dollar. They do not address the fact that Social Security is double-taxed. It is taxed once in our pay checks, and taxed again when we receive the benefits.
We can thank Democrats for that. Taxing Social Security was one of the first things the Clinton administration did - with Al Gore casting the deciding vote.
Illegal immigration is beyond frightening. Such immigration is a security threat to the average person as well as a taxing drain on health care and other social benefits. The elite do not see illegal immigration as a threat because they live with a good deal of security, both physical and social - unlike the majority of us.
Another distraction to actually helping Americans is "global warming." Scientists can't agree on whether carbon dioxide and human consumption are proven to have such an effect on the earth. Even Gore cannot believe it too strongly, since his Tennessee mansion (one of four homes) uses more than 20 times the average household's energy, per month - a little tidbit that the major newspaper of Tennessee managed to quell when the fact was uncovered by a think-tank entity.
These excesses do not include Gore's many private jet trips, limousines, etc. Carbon-neutral, carbon-offset purchases and carbon-yadda, yadda - all gimmicks. How about leading by action and simply cut his consumption? What a phony.
I cannot close this commentary without mentioning the saturation we're already getting about the presidential candidates with another grueling, torturous 20 months to go. -
Democrats are actually raising the issues of Newt Gingrich's and Rudy Giuliani's extramarital affairs and their divorces. I find that absolutely out of this world. Imagine - considering the Kennedys (including the swimming episode) and the Clintons, to name a few - any Democrat daring to bring up cheating on a spouse or divorce.
Remarkable. Utterly remarkable.

I wonder if the worthless RAT controlled Congress will be an anchor for their presidential candidate...

I hope they end up being a pair of concrete boots!
The author is not even particularly literate. She meant "profligate" in her opening, not "proliferate". I guess the ole' spell checker missed that one.
dangerous scu&bags in action. (please forgive the expletive as it's the only word that fits the description of all those treacherous, dangerous creatures in the picture.)
I'm continually astonished by the treacherous way they put their own political careers ahead of our national security and the lives of our soldiers and marines in Iraq. There isn't a single leader left in the democRAT party now that Lieberman is an independent.
They promised to end the war. They promised to reduce gas prices.
Now it looks like we're going into a recession. Need I mention that the last time they controlled the Senate, we went into a recession?
This woman can't be a demonrat...she actually gets it! Bump for future reference.
We're not going into a recession. The home building industry is in a recession but the rest of the economy is doing reasonably well.
"the way they put their own political careers ahead of our national security."
imho-it is not their own political careers but their loyalty to an internationalist agenda which holds American sovereignty in contempt.
