I guess a dumb question - but when my daughter got her drivers license at 16 (she is 17 now) she was asked if she wanted to be an organ donor - I wasn't sure what to tell her. At 16 CAN she make that decision? She is not an adult. With her at 16 can I or should I make that choice? I felt creepy making that decision for her, but didn't feel as if she was in a position, due to age to make it herself. Confusing ?

Hmm. That's a good question. Here is my answer in all of its confusion.

When my son was about five, my niece came down with a disease which could have required a bone marrow transplant. (She died at four after that course of action was determined to be futile.)

We sat him down and talked with him about it. He was (is) a bright kid. He asked lots of questions and finally said yes, he would be willing to do it. (We were very careful to make it as neutral a question as possible...describing positives and negatives without overloading the "she could die" portion of the situation.)

In any case, I believe that in the end, he truly understood what it would mean. If a five year old can...your daughter can. I would talk to her about it...positives and negatives...and support whatever she wishes, no guilt attached.

Hope that helps.

I told mine that I'm signed up to be an organ donor, and would like it if she were too, but would respect her decision either way.

She decided not to.
