Gonzales Aide Will Invoke 5th Amendment Republicans Back Away From Embattled Attorney General

POSTED: 9:54 am EDT March 26, 2007 UPDATED: 4:02 pm EDT March 26, 2007 WASHINGTON -- Monica Goodling, a Justice Department official involved in the firings of federal prosecutors, will refuse to answer questions at upcoming Senate hearings, citing Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination, her lawyer said Monday.

"The potential for legal jeopardy for Ms. Goodling from even her most truthful and accurate testimony under these circumstances is very real," said the lawyer, John Dowd.

He said that members of the House and Senate Judiciary committees seem already to have made up their minds that wrongdoing has occurred in the firings.

Meanwhile, the White House stood by Gonzales on Monday, even as support for the embattled attorney general erodes on Capitol Hill amid new questions about his honesty.

Three key Republican senators sharply questioned his truthfulness over the firings last fall of eight federal prosecutors. Two more Democrats on Sunday joined the list of lawmakers calling for Gonzales' ouster.

Several Republicans also urged President Bush to allow sworn testimony from his top aides about their role in dismissing the U.S. attorneys -- a standoff threatening to result in Capitol Hill subpoenas of White House officials

Its hard to support people who simply won't fight.

Yep.
Who wants to jump in a foxhole with a bunch of spineless cowards?

On day one of this fabricated "scandal" Bush should have laughed at the rats and their newsroom allies and then turned around and fired ten more US Attorneys just for poops and giggles. Instead he volunteers everybody to go testify at a congressional circus and sends Gonzales on an apology tour. Pathetic. I'm done with all of them.

her lawyer sounds like he's on the ball...pointing out that her answers will be twisted to fit a preconceived agenda.

Since the Rats and RINOs in congress has already said a crime was committed without evidence or legal precedence then everyone who talks to them should take the 5th.

Three key Republican senators sharply questioned his truthfulness over the firings last fall of eight federal prosecutors.

"Mr. Gonzales, we have reason to believe you are not an honest man."

"Why Senators, I am every bit as honest as the best of you."

Mr. Gonzales, that makes you a lying sack of $hit and we aim to see you pay for it."

I guess that's what disgusts me the most - those who govern us are some of the seediest scoundrels that ever walked the face of the earth and they have the hubris to opine that others are morally and ethically deficient.

Well, that's too bad. They'll miss you.

If I were any of the subpoenaed individuals, I'd take the fifth too. What happened to Scooter Libby (years of imprisonment threatened) is enough of a lesson that I'd smarten up on it.

Can the White House hire John Bolton as a sort of "Ambassador to the Congress" to deal with the Dem's strategy of "demonization 24/7"?

IMHO, a quick-witted, articulate debater should be able to run rings around the posse of idiots who are our current "Committee Chairman".

With respect to Monica Goodling, he might say:

"The Fifth Amendment was written to protect citizens from "Kangaroo Courts". Since Mr. Waxman is determined to play "Captain Kangaroo" here, Ms. Gooding has no choice but to use her Constitutional right to protect herself."

Alternately, Mr. Bolton might act as a White House Counsel and stand beside Ms Goodling (and any other innocents targeted by the Dem lynch-mob) and, "Perry Mason-like", throw any question, which is "incompetent, irrelevant and immaterial", right back at the kangaroos:

"Senator Biden, your "question" was so long and rambling, that we have no idea what you meant to ask. We doubt if you do. If it is not beyond your ability, would you please organize your thoughts before speaking. I'm sure it will help your coherence if you limit yourself to questions no longer than 25 words."

I'd like to see Mr. Bolton pin the phrase "incompetent" on every donkey who deserves it. IOW, all of them.

I expect that Mr. Bolton will want to ask for a pre-emptive "Pardoned for Contempt of Congress" letter if he intends to unleash the truly stimulating "sound-bites" that farces of this magnitude deserve.

Who knows? The media might even present those "sound-bites" without "spin"...

Damn right. And then I'd resign for having a boss who put me in that position.

Congress can simply give her immunity, since she's not the one they are after, and compel her to testify.

I'm no expert, but I don't think this helps the administration one bit. She is not one of the people covered by executive privilege. I believe that if she is offered immunity from prosecution for her testimony, that removes the potential for self-incrimination and she will be forced to testify (and I think the immunity will be contingent upon answers that don't consist of "I don't remember"). For the Democrats, this may fall under the category of letting the small fish go free in order to catch the bigger fish.

" I am sorry Senator, but due to the witch hunt mentality of this committee and the fact that I may say something that could bring perjury charges against me for a faulty memory, I invoke my 5th Amendment Rights against self -incrimination."

If there was 1/10th the amount of fight and steadfastness exhibited by this President and his staff as exists on his behalf on this website, his popularity would be in the 60s not in the 30s

There's nothing to give her immunity from and she knows it, she just doesn't want to fall into a perjury trap with catch 22 questions.

The chilling effect of the Libby conviction. Perjury trap. Why say anything if you know you can be prosecuted for it for political purposes? Dems have proved that they will use the justice system to destroy those that disagree with them.

We did not only fire 6 or 7, but each one was a documented wacko.

I'll say it again. The lack of character in the Bush Admin right now is a liability to the conservative movement; which stems from Bush's abuse of his base.
