U.S. Would Have Fired on The Iranians
UK Independent via. Hot Air ^

Posted on 03/25/2007 5:30:55 PM PDT by Weight of Glory

The executive officer - second-in-command on USS Underwood, the frigate working in the British-controlled task force with HMS Cornwall - said: “The unique US Navy rules of engagement say we not only have a right to self-defence but also an obligation to self-defence. They [the British] had every right in my mind and every justification to defend themselves rather than allow themselves to be taken. Our reaction was, ‘Why didn’t your guys defend themselves?’”…

As a first and required step, I agree with this 100%. However I still believe that we should launch a massive Air War against the terrorist regime in Iran to destroy its nuclear facilities, military infrastructures, command and control centers etc… The terrorists rulers in Tehran must learn once and for all that they are not going to control the Middle East, they must be broken and humiliated.

Tho, I bet Iranians didn't expect to be in a fight. If HMS Cornwall opened up and made a run for it, it'd have done well.

IF for some reason you miss the opportunity to sink the boats to prevent the hostage taking, then you start bombing Iran until they're returned, with the loud notice that if a hair on their head is harmed they'll suffer the big bomb.

That would put an end to this nonsense.

Memo to the Brits: The war has already started.

Not to mention the fact that the Iranians had dome this to them before.

If the Brits were unwilling to defend their personnel, those sailors and Marines should never have been sent out. That was their fist mistake.

And note to whichever Brit was running things out there on the waterway that day: Asking for permission was your second mistake.

I would never say that we or our Brit pals cant fight and kick butt but Id be willing to bet if this were 15 Yanks instead of Brits the outcome would have been the same. I cant understand why everyone is so scared of these Persian m&%$^#r &^@*$#rs.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I think it isn't so much fear of Iran as Iran's allies and the court of world opinion.

Weren't there some special forces guys who were detained by Iranians during the early part of the war and we didn't fire a shot? The U.S.S. Cole comes to mind as well. I certainly hope our guys would have fired and not be outgunned.

Sinking the whole Iranian Navy might prevent this from happening again in the forseeable future.

Yep! Our troops would have fired on the Iranian Sonovabitches , evaded capture and came home to be tried, condemned and sentenced to long terms in prison by anti-American-anti-Military sonovabitches in one of our politically correct courts.

At least the British troops know that they are screwed whatever they do and can act accordingly.

"I don't blame the Captain or crew. I blame the president of the US who called off the two F4C's that were enroute."

More than a few of us felt the Crew of the Pueblo had been set up to justify the call up of over 14,000 Air Force reservists and guard members by one of the worse presidents in history, LBJ.

I'm with you. First thing I said to my wife, was put up the fighter jets, fully armed and give them a small taste of the destruction that awaits them.

They will only recognize force. This wait, and wish diplomacy only emboldens them.

You are right. I believe War with Iran is not only inevitable it is a nessecity. They are the head of the snake and will not negotiate. That is why I am waiting for Bush to wake up and start selling this because it aint going to be easy convincing the public when the drive by media is already running stories on how bloody a war with Iran would be.

They need to retire this guy - quick!

I'm glad to know the USN had a reasonable ROE for this situation.

The UK ought to issue an issue an ultimatum: give us our sailors and marines back or we, and all of NATO, declare war.

Yep. In a perfect world. In the world we live in... maybe the Brits can offer the Iranians to keep the boat in exchange for the sailors...

Failure to thus secure the ship constitutes dereliction of duty, probably at multiple levels in the chain of command, not excluding the Dept. of State and the Oval Office especially including the State Department and Oval Office.
