Yes, I am aware of his excuse in 2000 about his prostate cancer. However, he wasn't so ill that he had to step down as mayor (which is theoretically more stressful than a senate campaign), so maybe it was just a convenient excuse.
But what I was really talking about was last fall, why didn't he run then? If he had defeated her, she would have been finished politically -- THAT would have been a demonstration of GOP loyalty.

Good Grief!! You actually think he should have run for a 6 year Senate seat and then ditch it in TWO YEARS to run for President???
