Giuliani campaigns in Newport Beach (and outlines his positions)

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani led off with his strongest card, his terrorism-fighting credentials, before touching on healthcare, immigration and energy policy in a speech to a welcoming crowd Saturday.

"Sept. 11, 2001, taught me — and I believe it taught a lot of people, including President Bush — that we have to remain on offense," Giuliani said. "That means that we have to use our military. We can't show weakness."

Giuliani seemed to hit all the right notes Saturday, getting applause when he criticized Democrats' stance on healthcare and advocated vouchers for schools.

On immigration, he told reporters he doesn't support amnesty for illegal immigrants, but he could support a guest worker program if there were adequate border security and tamper-proof ID cards. He said that even if illegal immigrants "can demonstrate that they are lawful, that they are paying taxes [and] that they'll pay penalties," they still shouldn't be put ahead of people who go through legal channels.

"And citizenship here, if it's earned, should be premised on being able to read and write English and understand American history, so we restore assimilation to the process of immigration," he said.

"Nothing will unite the Republicans more than a candidate who can beat Hillary Clinton," Curry said.

Some here (about 15%) HAVE NEVER BEEN CONSERVATIVES; but they are anti-Democrat (mainly anti-Clinton), so they have convinced themselves they are conservatives. So, when a Republican comes along who shares their non-conservative views, they assume he is a conservative too. Then, they become offended when their liberal positions are challenged. It's fairly pathetic.

Excellent point and a point some here tend to forget or ignore.

Or NEVER understood in the first place!

If this was first and foremost a Republican forum, the Rudyites would have a legitimate gripe, but it's not. Free Republic is, first and foremost a CONSERVATIVE forum and many of Rudy's beliefs are completely at odds with conservatism.

So, does this mean you believe in stifling freedom of speech? We are all conservatives here. Get a life.

Bush's conservativism has been sporadic at best, and real conservatives disagree with many of his positions.

As for Rudy's other talking points, they are hollow at best. Why should we think that Rudy will appoint judges who have philosophies that are in COMPLETE CONTRAST to his own?

I have to jump in here. I am the most optimistic person around here. I lost my daughter in Jan. 2004, my brother in May, 2006, my husband in July 2006, my bil in July 2006, my mother in January 2007 and just a few weeks ago, an aunt. Besides all those, I have lost about 13 cousins. I belong to several groups and they are not doing as well as I am now, even after 20 or so years. I have a strong faith and that is what keeps me going.

One of his favorite judges is Scalia. He said he will nominate judges like Scalia and Thomas.

I asked a question. Is your answer to that question "DNC talking points?".

What has Rudy Guiliani done to "attack terrorism"?

So, does this mean you believe in stifling freedom of speech?

If you believe that a PRIVATELY OWNED conservative forum banning or limiting certain views is a violation of First Amendment free speech rights, then you are totally uninformed about what our Constitutional rights actually are.

We are all conservatives here.

LMAO! You just keep telling yourself that.

"Your President, George W. Bush is also for civil unions, as are the majority of the people in the United States of America. He calls it "compassionate conservatism."

You said, "Your President". What do you mean by that? Is not President Bush *YOUR* president as well?

"I don't have any fear that a President Giuliani will "take our guns. This is pure fantasy."

No, fantasy is the world in which you live.

Ah yes, Rudy's version of:

"Read my lips, no new taxes."

If anyone thinks a party can be a majority run by scaring voters into voting against the opposition, that person is a fool.

FairOpinion does this all the time. If you don't back the liberal Republican, then you support the liberal Democrat. It's bordering on slander and I think the Mods should warn him/her about doing this all the time.

I see a blind faith, a belief that if Rudy says something, then its set in stone.

Hard to believe when his record is not what he is saying to get elected.

I have asked Rudy folks many questions over the last week, and they rarely answer, if they do, they never respond with facts to refute what you are saying. They usually try the trick of bringing RR down to Rudy status.

We all can't stand Hillary, Obama, or Gore. I know I am tired of being accused of being their supporter because I do not want Rudy.

If we are unimportant, then why do they keep this up?

plenty of people I know, including members of my own family, fall into the "independent" voting block. My 6 relatives in Florida all voted for Bush, they could care less about social issues.

I'm not a fan of Brownback, Huckabee, and others who want to push social issues exclusively. But at least a President should respect life and the 2nd Amendment at a minimum. If Giuliani would've supported the 2nd and didn't flap his gums about supporting abortion 24/7, I would've maybe excused his sordid personal life and remained a supporter.

I don't think anyone here posts more pro-Rudy articles than this guy does (of course, he has every right to do it since Jim allows it). I've accused him of being a Rudy campaign worker, or representative, and as of yet he has not denied being affiliated with them. Still waiting.

Hmmmnn? I see a pattern. It reminds me of the typical Demonrat voter. They believe the lies and vote for them.

I remember seeing a certain Hillary video this week. I am strangely reminded of the robot like people sitting in the rows of chairs.
