I seem to recall that one of the looney tune cartoons, maybe a Bugs Bunny episode was banned. I don't remember if it was released on DVD though. BTW, these would be great books for todays youth. Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Yeah, there have been a number of Disney ones that have been kept in the vault. They're usually able to be found on the 'net, but the quality is pretty poor.

The cartoon you're looking for is called "Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips," directed by Friz Freleng.

In the original Sambo tales, I believe he was an Indian boy (Indian as in the Asian subcontinent, not American indians). He was frequently portrayed as dark skinned...the Sambo's restaurant chain was accused of being racist because of its name but it was a tribute to their founders, whose nicknames were Sam and Bo, though some merchandising and advertising related to the chain brought up the old tale.

It looks like Freddy Krueger got ahold of that cover.

Actually, there are quite a few... Mostly featuring "stereotypical" black, Japanese and Nazi characters. One of the episodes is called "You're a Sap, Mr. Jap".

By the way, y'all, believe it or not, I actually saw a new, modern version of Brer Rabbit cartoons on Cartoon Network a while back. It was in the morning during the young kids' bloc, and it blew me out of the water that they would show such a thing in this day and time. It was quite gratifying to see not only the beloved characters but also Blacks presented in a rural (though a modern and non-slavery) setting (one scene showed a Black man raking in his small garden). Contrary to popular belief, not all Blacks are inner city urbanites, even in this day and time.

My one complaint was that they changed Brer Tarrypin to Brer Turtle (don't nobody know what a tarrypin is?). He was the character who related the stories to a young Black girl. (In Gullah stories, he's Buh Cooter.)

It was the cartoon issued during WWII where Bugs mocks the Japanese, who are portrayed as buck-toothed, nearsighted morons.
