I was in Hawaii about this same time as Obama attending U. of Hawaii. I remember the same thing. There was a slang word for whites and one for the Hawaiians and other islanders. Never heard one for Blacks. Many of the islanders preferred Blacks to Whites. I didn't see that much racism, but what was there sure didn't seem directed at the Blacks, but at Whites. Tourism is a big part of their economy so it wasn't made obvious to the tourists.

Ya' know, he seems to have his own issues with his skin color, and his race.

I think he is struggling with the problem highlighted by Rush's parody "Barak the Magic Negro." This passage is a transparent attempt to show that he is really Black because he was subject to racist treatment, and he can relate to other Blacks. Otherwise, they will discern that he is a pampered, assimilated elitist who has not the slightest idea what the 'hood is about.

This is actually hilarious. It reminds me of some rapper who brags about his "street cred", though he was raised in the middle class suburbs of Golden, Colorado, his father a nerd CPA and his mother an junior high school band teacher.

Remember that people called Obama "Barry", which most people would assume is short for Barnard, not Barack.
