U.N. Security Council Imposes New, Tougher Sanctions on Iran

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Saturday to impose moderately tougher sanctions against Iran, hoping to send Tehran a strong message that it will grow more isolated by refusing to suspend nuclear enrichment.

The 15 members of the Security Council approved a ban on Iranian arms exports and a freeze of the assets of 28 additional people and organizations involved in Iran's nuclear and missile programs. About a third of those are linked to the Revolutionary Guard, an elite military corps.

"This resolution sends an unambiguous signal to the government and people of Iran ... that the path of nuclear proliferation by Iran is not one that the international community can accept," said British Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry.

Iran has vowed the sanctions will only motivate it further to pursue nuclear power, a message Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki was expected to deliver to the Security Council. Mottaki made the trip instead of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who claimed he canceled his appearance because the U.S. failed to deliver his visa in time.

Raising tensions, Iran detained 15 British sailors and marines Friday in what it said were Iranian territorial waters near Iraq. The British sailors and marines had been on a mission to search for smugglers in Iraqi waters.

No, the UN is more like Wyle E Coyote. They'll keep going after that Road Runner even if they keep going over a cliff to do it.

Maybe the laughing in Iran won't be as loud this time. They know the threatening, pleading, begging letter from the un is coming any year.

The Iranian economy is in a frighteningly dizzy descent, if you have followed the news coming out recently. Trust me, the UN does not have to do much. Iran is self-destructing.

I've been watching the news on iran since the 70's when that sos carter let them get away with holding our people hostage. It was my first introduction to worthless politicians...

Trust me, the UN does not have to do much.

The un doesn't ever do anything (except undermine America)
They need to go...

Could Iran be holding the Brit Sailors in these nuclear facilities? They should be getting worried, and may be hedging their hand.
