I also don't think that they teach that the blacks who were shipped from West Africa were prisoners of war and were sold into captivity by blacks. Likewise, they adopt Arab names as a symbol of liberation with knowing that the Arabs were as much into the slave trade as much as the European colonial masters. The difference is that the Europeans had a radical change of mind. Led by the likes of William Wilberforce, the Anglo-Saxon powers abolished slavery. One detail in "Amazing Grace" that annoyed me was the failure to mention that we abolished the slave trade in 1807 in accordance with a compromise reached at the Constitutional Convention.
IIRC, European slave traders rounded up Kunta Kinte and others in the movie. That would have been next to impossible in real life as the local African tribal chiefs had a monopoly on the slave trade. Slaves could only be sold to outsiders at certain ports, the chiefs had huge standing armies to deal with anyone who would horn in on their business. A Western slave catching expedition would have been in "Indian country" the entire time with no chance of "the cavalry" coming to a rescue. They would have been slaughtered.
This made me wonder what else in the movie was BS.
Well, the Middle Passage were certainly a horror and those slaves--white or black-- unlucky enough to end up in the "Indies" could expect a short life-span. Those who ended up in North America were much more fortunate. While the slave population in the West Indies needed constant resupply from Africa, the slave population in North America grew rapdily after about 1720, and most of this was natural increase. The white population was growing even faster. Both Africans and Europeans were able to acclimatize to the continent enviroment. IAC. people may have heard that convicts were used to settle Georgia (and Australia) but they are not aware that the numbers were significant. The real difference between black slavery and white servitude was in the lengthy of sentence. The whites at least had hope of freedom.
I remember watching Roots. I thought it was good. My mother is a West Indian of various descents, mostly black. She's just happy to be in the United States working two jobs with her own house. Slavery was not much of a discussion in our house.
Thanks, I will check that out.
Good Morning Mass55th,
I was wondering if Ron and simpson's wife were at one time slave owners?
The murderer was probably obtaining some justice for their past ties to the savery trade.
Loser juice is considered a role model for being allegedly framed, almost lynched, and victimized by those racists blue-eyed devils.
When loser juice tried on those gloves in court, he was wishfully thinking, "Maybe I did not do it after all."
Blind Justice was made a mockery of in that tragic case and racially derived verdict of (not guilty)
Murderers should never be given a free pass based on their race. (Rackem, Packem and Stackem) in Hell.
Respectfully,
