Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has cooled his friendship with Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson now that the liberal Democrat has called for President Bushs impeachment.
In an interview Thursday with The Associated Press, Romney sought to minimize his relationship with Anderson, once a prominent example of bipartisan camaraderie. The two worked closely together when Romney ran the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
He was a mayor that worked well with me during the Olympics, and I supported his work as a mayor, said Romney, who spoke before an event in heavily Republican western Iowa, where he planned to meet privately with key activists. I do not endorse or support his views on President Bush or almost any other issue, particularly thats unrelated to being a mayor.
Anderson was so impressed with Romneys work on turning around the problem-plagued Olympics that he backed the Republican in a television commercial during Romneys 2002 campaign for Massachusetts governor.
People often say Im a Massachusetts-type Democrat. To me, thats a compliment, Anderson said in the spot, which ran in heavily Democratic Massachusetts. Anderson then urged viewers to take it from this liberal Democrat: If you want an amazing leader, vote for Mitt Romney.
In 2003, after he became governor, Romney returned the favor, making a television ad in support of Andersons campaign for a second mayoral term.
In my view, Salt Lake is a better place because of Rocky, Romney said in the ad.
Romney says his backing of the Anderson was limited to his dealings with him in putting on the Olympics and that he never endorsed Andersons social views.
Mayor Anderson became a fan of Governor Romneys executive leadership abilities, and Governor Romney appreciated the mayors support in making the Games a success, Eric Fehrnstrom, a spokesman for Romneys presidential campaign, said Thursday. But Governor Romney strongly disagrees with Mayor Andersons opinions on President Bush. Mayor Andersons opinions and beliefs are his own and are not shared by Governor Romney.
In 2003, Fehrnstrom - also acting as Romneys spokesman - told The Boston Globe: Sometimes personal friendships transcend politics. That is certainly the case with Mitt Romney and Rocky Anderson.
Rival presidential campaigns have alerted reporters to accounts of Romney endorsing Anderson, noting that Anderson supports abortion rights and gay rights and that he has called for Bushs impeachment.
Critics have accused Romney of shifting his position on abortion, gun control and gay rights to suit a conservative national GOP electorate now that hes no longer governor of a liberal-leaning state.
In the interview, Romney also took exception to rival John McCains record on campaign finance and immigration policy, suggesting the Arizona senators views have shifted as the 2008 presidential campaign has evolved. There are differences on issues and differences in experience, Romney said, reiterating earlier criticism. The difference on issues between Senator McCain and myself are probably more clear because hes been out for a while and Ive been out for a while.
Romney noted his hard-line stance on immigration and opposition to a campaign finance reform measure that McCain pushed with Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis.
One of the biggest differences is McCain-Feingold, said Romney. I think his campaign finance law was ill-considered and has been very harmful. Thats a big difference.
And Romney described an immigration reform bill supported by McCain as a badly crafted bill that would take us in the wrong direction on immigration.
McCains proposal would let some illegal immigrants in the United States earn citizenship - a move Romney firmly opposes.
Meanwhile, Drew McKissick, a Christian Coalition of America officer who ran a successful campaign to ban gay marriage in South Carolina, said Thursday he is endorsing Romneys presidential bid and will work for the campaign.
McKissick, the national coalitions secretary and board member, will be a paid South Carolina grass roots adviser for the campaign, Romney spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said Thursday.
"In my view, Salt Lake is a better place because of Rocky, Romney said in the ad."
Anderson is a big anti-gun guy. Member of bloomberg's "mayors against illegal guns" and reportedly doesn't allow cops to carry back up guns and discourages them from carrying anything off duty.
I lived in SLC from 1996-2001 and for the life of me I have never figured out how the Democrats keep getting their mayors elected there...Utah and Idaho are are far, far, far the most Republican states in the union.
Another Boston Herald hit piece on Romney taking things woefully out of context. These guys are looking pathetic.
"These guys are looking pathetic."
What is looking pathetic is romney's chances. He's third behind rudy and mccain. Throw newt or thompson in the mix and he's fourth.
Technically it was from AP but it did run in online and print versions of Herald...but the Herald did recently did that
"Fidel Romney" front page...
The guy who wrote the Fidel Romney story writes a hit piece on Romney approximately once a week. It's a bizarre obsession they've got at that paper. And there are lots of legitimate things to bash Romney over, but the Herald is just frothing at the mouth.
Rocky Anderson was on FOX the other day.
His views are right out of the far left play book.
Also a major player in the ACLU
How anyone who claims to be Republican and could side with him is very curious.
Anderson is not just a liberal, he is in the Cindy Sheehan camp of left wing loons.
