TMZ has learned Mel Gibson exploded in anger last night on a college campus after an expert on Mayan culture accussed him of racially stereotyping the Mayans in the movie "Apocalypto."
It happened last night at Cal State University at Northridge in the San Fernando Valley. Gibson was speaking to a film class about his movies, and several members of the Mayan community came to hear the famous director.
After Gibson's presentation, the crowd was allowed to ask questions. Alicia Estrada, an Assistant Professor of Central American Studies at CSUN, challenged Gibson, asking him if he had read about the Mayan culture before shooting the controversial film. Gibson said he had.
Estrada persisted, stating that representations in the movie that the Mayans engaged in sacrificial ceremonies and had bloodthirsty tendencies were both wrong and racist. Estrada and others tell TMZ that Gibson exploded in anger, responding, "Lady #### off."
We're told Gibson also became extremely angry when members of the Mayan community protested on how they were portrayed in the film. The emotional Mayan members were escorted out of the room, and we're told Gibson screamed a parting shot -- "Make your own movie!"
UPDATE: Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, told TMZ, "This person was a heckler who was rude and disrupted the event, so much so that the event organizers had to escort her out." For the record, Nierob, not Howard Rubenstein, reps Gibson.
Howard Dean this is not. Gibson made a movie not a history lesson. Accusations of racism, bigotry etc. etc. is a standard leftist tactic when they don't like whats being said.
Apocalyto is a great movie BTW I'm looking forward to the DVD.
"Whoa...Looks like little Mel's rage problem has not been taken care of by 'rehab". this guy is one raging, obnoxious, out of control man. If he can't even respond to questions in a forum without totally losing it...."
Try some smelling salts, and then take some deep breaths, you'll be OK.
My opinion of Mr. Bonaduce, previously none-existent, has soared.
Hey, Howard speaks fiction all the time! :)
Well, as an Italian, I'm just glad we're never stereotyped by Hollywood. </s>
hahha, Enterprise, you are funny.
Is there any doubt the Mayans performed human sacrifice?
Oh,m we were on the tour at Chichen Itza where the guide explained that there WAS no Mayan human sacrifice. Nope, the EVIL White Man made that up to demonize them. In reality, they were the world's first and foremost surgeons. Yup.
Mel Cussing Someone Out Ping....
Liberals to me are a lot like the Muslims. They get all bunched up if you make fun of them or displease them in any way. Makes me REALLY want to do that.
Good for you, Mel. Besides, if that Mayan person want to confront Mel, he's confronting the wrong person. History books and archeology indicates that human sacrifices were made to appease the gods. Further, H'weird always uses liberty license to tell a story. Mel's not any different. Smells of a setup to get Mel angry.
Sorry he lost his cool, but you can't blame the guy. He's somewhat of a genius, and they usually come with short tempers.
What are you talking about, they just sacrificed a lot of animals that had bones similar to men, women, and children...
After all as the leftists everywhere say, "IT's JUST A MOVIE folks!!
Mel Gibson, private individual. There is no constitutional right to be an unchallenged douche bag. This woman was that.
Mel Gibson has a history of stereotyping people in history. All Brits who saw "The Patriot" should have been outraged at his portrayal of the British during the American Revolution as stuck up aristocrats who deemed the Americans to be uncivilized for not dressing up in flashy red coats and wearing hats with ostrich feathers in them during battle.
"Good to have people like Mel Gibson and Ann Coulter around."
Perhaps I'm wrong but my thoughts are that Mel is certainly no conservate. I don't even think he's a Republican. He was blasting Bush, IRAQ, the US, etc just last month.
That video made my day.
Estrada is a prof in "Central American Studies" aka another Ethnic enclave studies:

Pulling the race card is what they do, to shame those who have a different view of the culture.
