TMZ has learned Mel Gibson exploded in anger last night on a college campus after an expert on Mayan culture accussed him of racially stereotyping the Mayans in the movie "Apocalypto."
It happened last night at Cal State University at Northridge in the San Fernando Valley. Gibson was speaking to a film class about his movies, and several members of the Mayan community came to hear the famous director.
After Gibson's presentation, the crowd was allowed to ask questions. Alicia Estrada, an Assistant Professor of Central American Studies at CSUN, challenged Gibson, asking him if he had read about the Mayan culture before shooting the controversial film. Gibson said he had.
Estrada persisted, stating that representations in the movie that the Mayans engaged in sacrificial ceremonies and had bloodthirsty tendencies were both wrong and racist. Estrada and others tell TMZ that Gibson exploded in anger, responding, "Lady #### off."
We're told Gibson also became extremely angry when members of the Mayan community protested on how they were portrayed in the film. The emotional Mayan members were escorted out of the room, and we're told Gibson screamed a parting shot -- "Make your own movie!"
UPDATE: Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, told TMZ, "This person was a heckler who was rude and disrupted the event, so much so that the event organizers had to escort her out." For the record, Nierob, not Howard Rubenstein, reps Gibson.
That's a great site. If you like dish.
Uh, and what is there to "respect"?
that a grown man, a director, producer and actor can not keep it together if he is heckled?
Does it occurr to anyone that Mel has a serious alcohol problem and a rage problem? That this is not "macho" this is pathetically 'losing control"....
And so REGARDLESS of Mel Gibson's behaviors...No matter what he says or does.....He will be adored on Freeper by the Christians and the Macho Men.
Rather than look at the issue...why not just go ahead and flame away.
I think blood and gore IS mostly what the Mayans did.
Did the Mayans practice human sacrifice? If yes, then shut up!
Wrong f-word. The one he used is okay. It's the one that Ann Coulter used that is verboten.
These people that are offended are looking for reparations!
The're not concerned with anything but extorting money They see Jesse and Al doing it and they figure why not us. Are the Scots next for Brave Heart? I DONT THINK SO! Stop your crying Im drowning.
So, all those Discovery Channel shows depicting ritual sacrifice on their ruins were faked? Does Estrada deny the sacrifices, or is the position that they weren't bloodthirsty, but justified? I'm with Mel, make your own movie with your own point of view, and let's see who will pay to see it.
That is why I won't ever go to another one of his movies. He is clearly unstable. He might have psychological problems that he needs to seek help for.
Mel is correct, those Mayans were blood thirsty savages, who were later tamed with the advent of civilization and Christianity.
I agree with mel on this
For what? How to be PC when confronted by sacrifice deniers? How to not use cuss words? I was offended by his triad against the Jews while drunk, and it had nothing to do with cuss words. He did seek help for that. Do you think he was wrong about Mayan sacrifice?
Actually TMZ used to be Celebrity Justice...the TV show...it just changed names...same people run TMZ.
Which person is your mentor? The Night Rider or the Toe Cutter?
No..he wasn't wrong about the mayan sacrifice. All the more ridiculous and pathetic that he could not control himself and take control of the situation.
Or maybe, its all about rating and PR ... another outburst and everyone loves the guy and "respects him even more." pretty clever Mel..give the masses what they want ...violence and then tell a woman off and really show them how tough you are.
The comment about respect was in response to how Bonaduce handled the heckler while he was trying to eat. He had every right to get in that clown's face. As for Mel Gibson, he had every right to get in THAT clown's face too. But I won't flame away. No need to. I stand with Gibson, you can stand with the leftist clown. Or, you can squat with her if you wish.
"Estrada persisted, stating that representations in the movie that the Mayans engaged in sacrificial ceremonies and had bloodthirsty tendencies were both wrong and racist. "
How much you want to bet this woman is pro-abortion?
