Not Easy Being Green

Environment: Feeling a bit smug about owning that hybrid? Better rein in that contempt for those who still drive primitive conventional cars. It seems that a Hummer is more ecologically friendly than a Prius.

Yes, the Hummer will burn much more gasoline and discharge more emissions than a Toyota Prius driven the same distance. But a car's ecological footprint — if we may twist an environmentalist phrase — is more than just fuel mileage.

The Prius is the biggest polluter of them all.

The "study" has already been debunked several times on other threads.

Cliff Notes Version: It will cost somewhat less than $50,000 in total cost over the life of a Prius, including the purchase price.

So if it uses over $300,000 in energy, who paid for all that energy? And isn't that really a great deal, getting $300,000+ worth of energy for less than $50,000?

Also, the owner of a hummer suggested it couldn't last 300,000 miles, while no prius has been reported to have died at 100,000.

Then there's the expected life span of the Prius: 100,000 miles, or a third of the Hummer's

I was good and ready to believe this article but I have to call BS on that.

The Prius is the biggest polluter of them all.

This article should get a good deal of attention, but probably won't; even on FR. This is the stuff with which the tree huggers and their fellow travelers can be buried, so don't look for it on the front pages of the Dinosaur Media™ or on the nitwit evening news.

Pinging a few that come to mind.

This "study" just refuses to die -- someone please put a wooden stake through it.

The GW alarmists couldn't have created a better straw-man argument if they tried.

---Feeling a bit smug about owning that hybrid?---

Feeling a bit smug about finding this article?

Then perhaps you can explain who's picking up the tab on that Prius. At $2.87/lifetime mile the Prius would cost $287,000 over it's supposedly brief lifetime. Who's picking up the tab? Hint. It isn't the owner.

It's hard to believe people are so gullible, so lacking in analytical skills as to be taken in by what can only be a college prank. If you look closely at the original article and do some checking of the "facts" you would see there is not one true fact in it.

If this article is BS, would you be kind enough to point to some earlier discussion on FR where the "study" was debunked? God knows we don't need to be spreading any manure.

First, explain to me who pays the $287,000 to operate the Prius over 100,000.

There were several. I think this was the last one I participated in, from a couple days ago.

An inconvenient truth about hybrids.

Here were some others. You will note some are from last summer, when this "study" was also making the rounds about Prius costing $3. The difference seems to be the addition of a "battery plant polluted back in the early 80s and that should count against the Prius"

Hummer vs. Prius

So you're learning disabled, I'm sorry! But there was no reason to point out your problem.

Ok; fair enough. Taking a quick read of some of these threads might indicate some journalistic license by the creator(s) of the study. They would have been better served in making their point(whatever it was), by being a little more "accurate" in their conclusions.

Thanks.

It's frightening how easy it is to put one over on folks when it's something they want to believe.
