I walked by that particular sculpture many hundreds of times over a number of years, and it never struck me as particularly ugly - just pointless. It certainly doesn't compare to the Great Sail, but then again that has a function.
Yes, actually, I rather like Alexander Calder, who started the whole business, and Ruth Nevelson isn't bad. But they sure made a lot of trouble down the line. There's a lot of ugly imitations. I'd rather see a good classical statue any day of the week.
