You mean what the scientists were telling us was true about the sun ... wasn't true?

Shocking, isn't it?? However, I'm sure everything they have told us about the origins of the universe, the "evolution" of species...they are like totally sure all of that is right! No...really...I mean it.

Well, I would tell you a true story. One of my former co-workers was so "proficient" in reading the basic analytic spectra that his ineptitude became proverbial. Once he was loudly wondering about the negative integration he was getting from a poorly phased NMR spectrum, and received an advice to turn the spectrum the right sway up. Similar stories abounded about much more proficient scientists of the past; the best one I've heard about concerned the prominent theoretician Jacob Frenkel - he managed to give a self-consistent explanation to the experimental curve turned on its side - and then provided another explanation of the experimental data, when they apologized and brought him a corrected one. He is our patron saint.
