The first mega-hit campaign video of the 2008 campaign, which portrayed Hillary Clinton in the role of George Orwell's Big Brother, was the work of a strategist at a consulting firm with ties to the Barack Obama campaign.
The campaign of Clinton's chief rival for the Democratic presidential nomination said last night it "had no knowledge and had nothing to do with the creation" of the video mash-up that took the Internet by storm beginning two weeks ago.
The consulting company, Blue State Digital, which designed Obama's Web site, issued a statement last night saying it fired employee Philip de Vellis after he acknowledged creating the video, which morphed Apple Computer's famous "1984" ad into a slam against Clinton.

He might want to get himself an automatic car starter if he doesn't already have one.
The only thing I can see that could have been of interest is that Apple probably has copyright over the original, and the actors and actresses probably still get residuals, so if it had been done "officially" someone would have been paying out money.
If Apple had not defended their copyright, maybe it would technically be considered an in-kind contribution to a campaign.
So it is useful to know it was done by someone on their own without ties to any campaign, from an academic point of view.

What articles show that Apple defended its copyright in this case? I haven't seen a single mention if that. Indeed, it's the most interesting aspect of the matter, strongly indicating that some senior Apple people probably acquiesced in the ad and that he ad was coordinated between Apple, de Vellis, and the Obama campaign.
