Don't know about Roberts, but Thompson is a big guy -- 6'6", I believe.

Thompson is telegenic and says the right things, but he didn't exactly cover himself with glory as a senator.

As a matter of fact he always struck me as something of a weak sister.

He's a protogé of James Baker and is tight with John McCain, which gives me great pause.

I am actively encouraging others to check Fred out.If we encourage Fred to run,he will be under the scrutiny that expose a mans' true beliefs.William Rusher said in a recent article that Fred "didn't have a flyspeck on his record".That is incredible.I hope he runs!

My first exposure to him was when he filled in for Paul Harvey a few times over the last few months. I liked the guy right away not even knowing who the guy was or his political leanings.

OK so it was Howard Baker.

But that doesn't vitiate to problem of Thompson being a buddy of John McCain or the fact of his weak performance as a senator.

When Thompson chaired a Senate committe, the ranking minority member John Glenn walked all over him.

Thompson may not be an empty suit, but he'll do as a reasonsable facsimile of one until the real article comes along.

Based on past performance, Thompson doesn't have the cajones to be president.

Not everyone works in ways that makes their successes apparent to all.

What some saw as being "walked all over" could, very well, have been making a compromise for the sake of of the "bigger picture". None of us know.

As for the comment "Thompson doesn't have the cajones to be president."

The Senate is not conducive to revealing leadership skills. It's all about the Club.

I respect Thompson for leaving. People like Kerry or Kennedy who stay in for life are the least qualified to lead this country.

Since McCain and Thompson are best of friends, do you think Thompson will run without the approval of McCain. I sense that McCain will drop out if Thompson runs, etc. what you say?

Speaking of his Senate record:

Thompson is GREAT. However, I have mixed emotions since he supports McCain. Also, I will never forget the wimpy job he did as CHAIRMAN of the Governmental Affairs Committee, with John Glenn as minority head, while investigating the Clinton administration and foreign campaign money. Fred just caved in to John Glenn (minority head) Glenn overpower him on the Clinton position. Consequently, John Glenn's payoff was to ride on the Space Shuttle as the oldest Astronaut on some aging mission. It was a payoff, thanks to the poor performance of Fred Thompson.

Would he be as wimpy against the Islamofacists? It's time to have an SOB as president so we can maintain a non politically correct country

IN a March 3 memo, the Senior Minority Counsel on the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee outlines for Sen. John Glenn (Ohio) what he hopes will be the ranking Democrat's contribution to the Asiagate investigation -- 11 subpoenas on conservative activist groups. The list, since forwarded to committee chairman Fred Thompson (R., Tenn.), reads like a "Who's Who" of the conservative movement, including Citizens for a Sound Economy, the Christian Coalition, and Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform.

In mid March, Senate Republicans agreed to open the door to this potential harassment of their allies after a high-stakes battle over the scope of Sen. Thompson's investigation. Thompson, the hulking 54-year-old former actor who looks the part of a President and wants to play one in real life, laid the predicate for this in February by acceding to the demands of Democrats for an investigation broad enough to include a hunt for GOP wrongdoing.

This set off alarm bells among his Republican colleagues, who fear he will keep stoking his amazing media hype by playing the bi-partisan reformer at their expense. So, privately, they discussed shutting Thompson down and, instead, hoping for an independent counsel.
