State Police today are using boats and a helicopter to search Boston Harbor for a missing sailor as the U.S.S. Donald Cook prepares to depart this afternoon.
The search of the harbor and waterfront near downtown for Dustin Willis began at 7 a.m. and includes the Coast Guard, said Officer James Kenneally, a Boston police spokesperson.
"This is a last ditch search to find the sailor," Kenneally said. "We're looking anywhere where someone could have fallen into the water."

Very odd. Having said that, falling overboard at night was always a danger. Especially with water temps so cold.
Sounds more like he got mugged on land, and never made it back to the ship.

He was at Quincy Market with some friends when they got separated. His cell phone was later found outside a restaurant.
Update: A body has been found in Boston harbor close to Legal Seafoods where his cell phone was found. No positive id yet.
The fact that he was talking to his girlfriend on the phone when separated, and the phone stayed on dry land makes it sound like a criminal act to me. If he fell in, the phone would have been with him; if he made it back to the ship the phone would have either been onboard or with him when he went in.
It was not clear from the story that I read that the phone was near a restaurant, only that it had been answered by a spanish speaking man. Neither fact is inconsistent with my theory.
I'll hold off on further speculation until more is said about the body that has been found.
I was in the area and saw the body bag as it was pulled from the water. It was a ghastly sight.
Wow, that must have been awful. I know it was snowing really badly that night and I guess if he was drunk he could have had some kind of accident but the information about the cell phone makes one suspicious.
