It's funny. Before he imploded last year, the biggest FR argument against George Allen was that "Senators can't win."

If I had the time/desire to do a search I bet I could find a bunch of Thompson supporters reminding us just how long it's been since we elected a Senator.

1960. The last time someone who had served only as a US Senator was elected president.

Now name the last election where the winner was someone who had only served in the elected office of big-city mayor.
