Today is Persian New Year let us not forget the many years of friendship between US and Iran because of a highly anti-Persian regime.
"Americans believe the future of Iran will be decided by the people of Iran and we believe that future can be one of prosperity and achievement. We look forward to the day when our nations are friends.." - President George W. Bush
The 2,500 year celebration of Irans monarchy (Persian) consisted of an elaborate set of festivities that took place October 12-16, 1971 on the occasion of the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of the Iranian monarchy by Cyrus the Great. The intent of the celebration was to demonstrate Iran's long and magnificent history and to showcase its contemporary advancements under the administration of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran.
And then came Jimmy Carter...
And don't forget to give a moment of silence in reverence of Jimma "Peanut Brain" Carter, the only idiot could turn our staunchest ally into our worst enemy.
EVERY major problem we have today can be traced to three things that Carter did:
1. Betrayal of the Shah, who was among the most loyal allies we have ever had.
2. Betrayal of Israel and forcing Prime Minister Begin to sign accords that were totally opposed to Israel's interests.
3. Betrayal of Taiwan, which was the start of communist-totalitarian China becoming an economic power.
Queen Farah had the most beautiful jewelry. I hope she managed to get it out when they had to leave.
Yep, you got it. I would add the Panama Canal giveaway to this List of Shame, although that is only now beginning to bear its destructive fruit.
There are plenty of major blunders made by the Manchurian Candidate, but it's those three that have had the most long-lasting (and ongoing) negative consequences.
Carter is lucky that we are a constitutional republic and not one of the totalitarian dictatorships he seems to favor, because many governments would have executed Carter for treason.
4. Selling out the Panama channel to the Chinese.
See #9. The Panama Canal was huge, but (as of yet) not nearly as devestating. In hindsight, some of the problems we have with the Panama Canal are due to the fact that Bush41 didn't force new terms after Noriega was ousted in 1989.
Funny, I thought Fidel was taller than that.
That's not Castro. That's Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, who was toppled by Communists.
The Shah didn't hang out with Commies like Fidel... and I doubt Fidel would ever had participated in that festival of "right-wing reactionary US puppets".
And yet the dweeb Jimmah receives the Nobel.
When Gorbachev won the Nobel Prize in 1990, I pretty much concluded that it was a leftist sham. When Arafat won in 1994, I knew for certain that they had jumped the shark.
While I knew it was not Fidel, I did not know it was Haile Selassie, whose photo I'd never seen before. I just thought the man looked a lot like Fidel, hence the attempt at humor.
There is a picture of the Shah with some Soviets, but they were there because he sold them oil.
Yes, but from which date? Post-1953? The Shah met Stalin at the Tehran conference 1943 and Soviet officials up to 1953, but I doubt that after the coup there was any such high-level meeting again. Nontheless there still was the Soviet Embassy in Tehran.
And because of the peanut farmer from Georgia, we are in the situation we are
One of the pictures from the celebration in 1971 has him talking with Soviets. From what I've read, his relationship with the Soviets roughly paralleled ours, but he had to remain on at least "friendly" terms with the Soviets because of the border with them and his desire to continue to have access to the Caspian Sea.
