Councilman Noach Dear, an Orthodox Jew and Democrat from Brooklyn, said he could not vote in favor of the legalization of ferrets as pets for a simple reason: he was reminded by his rabbi that they are not kosher.

As I recall from my reading of Leviticus, beasts of the land are kosher if, and only if they have cloven hooves and chew the cud. This makes dogs, cats and bunnies all unclean, doesn't it? Does an animal being unclean prohibit an observant Jew from keeping it as a pet?
