Republican officials operating at the behest of the White House have begun seeking a possible successor to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, whose support among GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill has collapsed, according to party sources familiar with the discussions.

The White House released a statement that they would like to see Al stay on...
Translation: "we would like to see Al stay. But we understand if...by some extreme urging on our end...he decides to resign"
And don't blame Bush for this. Its those lousy TURNCOAT CONGRESSIONAL REPUBLICANS that keep feeding the Administration to the wolves.

Oh please, let's not throw out the race card. Many conservatives, including FReepers have had problems with Gonzalez's pro-Amnesty, open-borer, anti-border agent stance. He should have been canned when he went after Americans who risked their lives defending our borders against drug smuggling illegals. Good riddance!
Houdstooth, this is nothing new. At the beginning of 2006, at staff retreats, Republican staffers were being told by leadership that it was likely they would lose the majority.
They gave up in Jan of '06!!!!

And the White House never defends ANYONE or ANYTHING they do or say.

I don't know what to think. Gonzalez has been just about the worst AG we've ever had. He has allowed people like Berger to go scott free and then did absolutely nothing to help Libby. That said, although under normal circumstances I would be more than happy to see him go, this is going to be a serious mistake. If you keep caving to the dems they will just become more rabid.
They have been seeking in other ways too and I have stifled what they are seeking for quite some time.
I just got another plea for help that will go unanswered until I feel comfortable with my funds transfers again.

The panel, including Sammon and Krauthamer(sp), said it was true.....they also said all Gonzales had to say was *we have the right to fire and that is the end of it*....the panel said that once Gonzales resigns they will continue to go after Rove.

I stated your point and through in the race card for the Party that says they are for minorities but spit on them at every chance.

The Democrats discovered a while ago that this administration rolls over like a frightened puppy anytime the Democrats raise the spectre of a fake scandal. Every time the Republicans cave in, it gets worse. You would think that anyone with a lick of common sense could figure that out.
If Gonzales leaves, I would imagine that if Hitlery requested it, she could have an "early" transition team in place with no problem.

I see the problem more with the GOP in the House and Senate then I do with the WH. The WH has been inept on the PR front for the last 2 1/2 years.....but the members of the GOP in the House and Senate have refused to fight at all for the last 5 years...(and it is the WH taking ALL the arrows 24/7).
While the GOP members run and hide (or worse, attack the WH along with the DEMs/MSM).
That the GOP & WH can't get on the offensive on this issue is pathetic. They have done absolutely nothing wrong. With that said, if Gonzalez goes......it won't mean a thing to the big picture....and all the hyper ventilating about how much damage it will do is nonsense....only to fuel the 24/7 news cycles...
Republican TURNCOATS..er...uh...congressional members do not stand up to the White House. They stand against them to save their cushy little committee assignments.
This past summer. Barton led a bunch of them on one last cushy Congressional Delegation trip to the upscale European countries. Oh yeah...it was a research trip to Sweden, Netherlands, etc....sure..whatever.
They only care about themselves. They spent most of October working to secure committee assignments...instead of fighting.
I'm beginning to wonder about Bush's mental state-seriously. He seems so cowed and defeated. I wonder what's really going on.
