BRUNSWICK, Ga. Three days before young Christopher Michael Barrios disappeared, a child molester suspected in the six-year-old's killing was sentenced to probation instead of prison for violating conditions of Georgia's sex offender registry.
The suspect, George David Edenfield, also never served prison time for his 1997 child molestation conviction after he struck a plea deal with prosecutors, according to a review of court records by The Associated Press.
Stephen Kelley, district attorney for the Brunswick Judicial Circuit, said today that it was not a breakdown in the system -- just a tragic situation.
Still, Christopher's father and grandmother blamed the court system for not putting Edenfield in prison.
The 32-year-old Edenfield is one of four suspects arrested last week in connection with Christopher's abduction and slaying. The child's body was found Thursday stuffed in a trash bag dumped along a wooded roadside about three miles from his home. He had been missing for a week.
On March 5th, three days before Christopher vanished, Edenfield pleaded guilty in Superior Court to violating a state law that prohibits sex offenders from living within a thousand feet of schools, playgrounds or other places that draw children.
Court records show sheriffs' deputies told Edenfield in September that he had ten days to move from his previous home near downtown Brunswick, which sat too close to a playground. He was arrested October 9th after he failed comply.
They'll never learn.
WTF??!!
Yeah, tragic enough that Kelley should serve out Edenfield's original sentence. Time to hold some of those people accountable.
I hope BO goes after the officials.
What ever happened to that wonderful plan to the death penalty for sex offenders? IF that does not pass, how about a law that turns these scum buckets over to a mob of parents?
Meadow Muffin
Where are the libs screaming to save the chilren? Probably out trying to make sure felons can vote.
Children don't vote, but the pervert constituency is solid (D).
I would start with the numbskulls who elected the prosecutor. After all he was just representing those who elected him.
The classic CYA defense...
I reject the notion that just because someone can string a bunch of words together, it makes the statement true.
It was another dismal failure of the system!
some of 'em are right here on FR to.
And the judge of the day is.............
In such a case, the judge should be tried along side him for the murder.
Disgusting.
Later pingout.
More evidence that child molesters need execution.
That little boy was not trash. The pervert treated him as a disposable object to use and throw away. What could have given him the idea that he had that kind of right? He proved himself to be loveless, dangerous and arrogant, a pure hate-filled, self-entitled monster. He has proven that he can't live in our society and our justice system has the responsibility to protect the public from the likes of him. This type of case is the reason for the death penalty.
The sad part is that his death wont bring the little boy back - he is with Jesus now. I pray for his (the boy's) mother, that she find comfort in His loving arms, for she will live every day struggling to forgive the monster for the sake of her own peace while mourning the loss of her sweet baby - forever.
There is evil in our world.
We live in a society that is largely void of common sense.
We have lost at least 2 girls that we know of in Florida because of the same garbage.
Judge has chance to put offender in jail but doesn't.
John Couey & Joseph Smith will likely play the legal system for all it's worth to delay their deaths.
It is also a crock that the people who were present when Jessie Lunsford was being buried alive got off scott free! Biggest crock I've heard of in a long time and I'm no spring chicken!
I think the guy should have been in jail, but the situation would have been the same one way or the other. The three other people would have done the deed. Hopefully the four people will be off the streets now.
Paging Bill O'Reilly...
