of course, new tone bush would gladly offer his own hand and neck, and those of his former conservative base, to the 21st century copperheads.

why?

because he has looked deep into the eyes of the democrats and peered into their souls.

And never forget it was an activist actor who killed Lincoln...imagine Martin Sheen or Alec Baldwin with guts.

How much guts does it take to shoot someone in the back of the head? I don't know anything about Sheen, but I could see an unstable lunatic like Baldwin during one of his frequent temper tantrums doing that.

We need a President with the balls to suspend habeus corpus like Lincoln did

YEAH! We have to suspend freedom so that we can fight the people who would suspend our freedoms! do I have that right? In fact, who needs freedom for all men, anyway? What a quaint idea! The fact is that only the good guys need freedom..., or at least only the good guys DESERVE freedom!

The fact is that liberty means idiots have the right to say outrageous things, wrong things, hateful things, and not have to worry about suffering political reprisal for it. It is, in fact, that freedom that allows you to (among other things) post one of the most blatant stupidities I have seen in a while in this forum and not have the Stasi come knocking at your door.

Our fathers knew that the greatest danger was NOT the Jacobean anarchists (the eighteenth century version of communists and leftists), but government itself.

I despair of the "conservatives" on FR who are nothing but fascists who think they can avoid being spotted as such simply by wrapping themselves in a flag.

cheers
DoP

The Copperheads were unwittingly much closer to being right than today's anti-war crowd.

If you think DiLorenzo's radical Libertarian propaganda is an accurate picture of the real Lincoln, then you would probably buy Michael Moore's propaganda as an accurate description of the real George Bush.

Agreed. The analogy is weak and the circumstances are entirely different.

Ya... just harmless little balls of fuzz --- from Robespierre all the way done to Lenin, Mao and Pol Pot.

Another unreconstructed "rebel" who's still fighting the "Lost Cause"?

"How much guts does it take to shoot someone in the back of the head?"

Maybe guts is the wrong word, but Boothe murdered the POTUS in front of witnesses who personally knew him, at a time and place that people were regularly hanged. He certainly knew his actions would cost him his life-call it what you will.

More likely someone poorly educated in history who gets sucked in by the simplistic radical Libertarian line that Lincoln was the father of big government.

"Experience proves that the man who obstructs a war in which his nation is engaged, no matter whether right or wrong occupies no enviable place in life or history. Better for him, individually, to advocate ‘war, pestilence, and famine,' than to act as obstructionist to a war already begun. The history of the defeated rebel will be honorable hereafter, compared with that of the Northern man who aided him by conspiring against his government while protected by it. The most favorable posthumous history the stay-at-home traitor can hope for is oblivion." -- Ulysses S. Grant, in his book, "Personal Memoirs"

a snake, particularly a poisonous one, describes the slithering, slimy democrats perfectly.

I agree. No matter what the term meant in the past it describes the present day Democrats. The geography is the only thing that has changed.

He certainly knew his actions would cost him his life-call it what you will.

If you read what he said at the time, he was convinced that with Lincoln, plus VP Johnson and SoS Seward all dead, the Union government would collapse, the Confederates would win, and he would become their greatest national hero.

Yes, he was crazy as hell, plus stupid. But the question is one of bravery. He had his escape fully planned including safe houses, extra horses and weapons. He had every expectation in his own demented imagination of succeeding in escape. JW Booth thought he could get away with it. He did not expect to die.

One person's prescription to act as Lincoln did does not speak for everyone. Nor would everyone feel that is the most effective application to take on the terrorist threat.

But citing their wish for stopping the enemy's effort to use WMD is not farfetched or fascist. In fact there is little doubt among many experts that such plans are moving ahead and will be employed as soon as possible.

Such an event on American soil will lead to curtailing civil rights and no one would be able to circumvent such an action as anything other than needed.

Most folks on FR would probably agree that such a plan is underway and that the current resources arrayed against it are inadequate. That's hardly a threat to civil liberties but it is a reasonable assessment of the threat against the republic.

A rather good article that predicts the future from the pages of history. I'm guessing the Rats of today are suffering, and will suffer, the eternal hatred of the military and patriots of our nation.
