Pessimism 'growing among Iraqis'

Pollster conducts a survey of Iraqi opinion

Iraqis have become less optimistic about their future, the poll suggests

A new survey paints a pessimistic picture of Iraqis' confidence in their own government and in coalition forces.

Only 18% of Iraqis have confidence in US and coalition troops, while opinion is almost evenly split on whether to have confidence in Iraq's government.

About 86% of those questioned expressed concern about someone in their household being a victim of violence.

More than 2,000 people were polled for the study, which was commissioned by the BBC, ABC News, ARD and USA Today.

The survey was conducted by D3 Systems.

The latest findings contrast strongly with the outlook among Iraqis in 2005, when respondents to a similar survey were generally hopeful about the future.

Asked whether they thought reconstruction efforts in Iraq had been effective, some 67% said they felt they had not.

Religious divide

The poll paints a picture of an increasingly polarised Iraq, with acutely diverging views between Sunnis and Shias - Sunnis appearing more pessimistic.

Pessimism is most keenly felt across central Iraq, including Baghdad, where Sunnis are most numerous.

Religious differences are particularly displayed in attitudes towards the execution of Saddam Hussein.

Sunnis questioned largely regarded the manner of the former Iraqi leader's death as inappropriate and unlikely to help the cause of reconciliation; Shias predominantly took the opposite view.

No one however wanted Iraq divided along sectarian lines.

Further details of the poll will be available on the BBC News website at 1200 GMT on Monday.

When polls draw opposite conclusions, one knows that neither means anything. If violence dampens down below the level before February, 2006, then we will know we are succeeding and with us, the Iraqi government.

"About 86% of those questioned expressed concern about someone in their household being a victim of violence."

Gee, do ya think. With daily suicide bombings, they would have to be idiots not to be "concerned". Hell, I'd be "terrified"! Which of course, is the whole point of the campaign of "terror" being waged by the "terrorists". This may well be the stupidest poll ever taken.

Just found this:

Poll: Bias 'alive and well' in press

**********************************EXCERPT****************************************

By Jennifer Harper
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
March 16, 2007

The vast majority of American voters detect the presence of political bias in the mainstream news media, according to a Zogby poll released yesterday in conjunction with the George Washington University Institute for Politics, Democracy and the Internet.
Sentiment is strong: 83 percent of likely voters think bias is "alive and well." Of that number, 64 percent said the press leans left, while slightly more than a quarter -- 28 percent -- said there was a conservative bias.
Naturally, there's a partisan divide, and a pronounced one. Among Republican respondents, 97 percent said the press was liberal. Two-thirds of political independents agreed with them, with less than a quarter of the independents -- 23 percent -- saying there was a conservative bias.
Democratic respondents revealed a spectrum of perceptions.
"Democrats, while much more likely to perceive a conservative bias than any other group, were not nearly as sure the media was against them as were the Republicans," the survey said. "While Republicans were unified in their perception of left-wing media, just two-thirds of Democrats were certain the media skewed right -- and 17 percent said the bias favored the left."

The 17 per cent are glad that it does, while "just" two-thirds along with the remaining 16-17 per cent are just plain crazy or maybe a little stupid. :')
