I notice the article said:
"Applewhite and six members of the cult had been castrated in Mexico a few months earlier another way to deal with unwanted desires."
Could it be that Applewhite woke up without his nads and thought, "Oh S@#%!, When I screw up I really screw up! I've got to get to the Mother Ship ASAP with my slaves of course.!"
"Evolution in Action" doesn't begin to describe this sort of behavior. Castration AND suicide? That's a Double Darwin Award!
Here's some background, a mirror of their website;

These is a prominent engineer (used to be head of Public Works in the City) and his wife (a judge) whose daughter was in Heaven's Gate and one of the last ones to committ suicide (after helping the others do it). Her sister (their other daughter) was recently over in Israel to help the Palestinians and got beat up by them -- but she blamed it on Israel.
It makes me wonder how they screwed up their daughters heads so bad.
CNN's Anderson Cooper program is doing a report on the 10-year anniversary tonight at 10 EDT.
Greasers will have to drive their chrome laden 55 Chevys into volcanoes.
Yes, I remember the unopened email letter to them: "Emergency, departure delayed. Repeat, Departure Delayed. Astral tail winds in Hale-Bopp making it impossible for us to take you on this trip. We will make new arrangements soon."
groan!
It was truly HORRENDOUS!
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Do=Doh!!
I remember the Saturday Night Live skit soon afterwards showing Marshall Applewhite with the other members cavorting on the spaceship giving an interview on TV. One reporter asked Marshall if there was anything he was surprised to have found out after getting on the spaceship. To which Marshall replied, "There was one thing, that whole castration thing, turned out we were way off on that one."
