A group supporting equality for homosexuals is not being warmly welcomed at an Upstate campus.
Members of the group, called the Soulforce Equality Riders, contacted Bob Jones University because of its policies on homosexuality. Members of the group want to visit the campus and talk to students, but that may not happen.
The university's public relations department told WYFF that the Soulforce Equality Riders has plans to visit the school on April 4 even though the school doesn't want them to.
According to the group's Web site, the Soulforce Equality Riders group is composed of 50 activists from across the country.
The mission statement says: "The purpose of Soulforce is freedom for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people from religious and political oppression through the practice of relentless non-violent resistance."
Bob Jones University does not plan to allow the group on campus.
In a written statement, Dr. Stephen Jones, the president of Bob Jones University said that scriptural teaching on homosexuality is consistent in the Old and New Testaments. "The track record and stated goals of this group demonstrate that their objective is not to conduct two-way dialogue, but to pressure us to compromise our biblical stand and change our policies."
According to the university, students at Bob Jones voluntarily sign statements that they will conform with the school's policy which prohibits an for of sexual activity outside of the scripture's boundaries.
The university said that includes sex outside of marriage and homosexuality.
Carol Keirstead, with Bob Jones University, said, "Bob Jones University would not have chosen this visit, however, while we cannot grant the group's request for public forums aimed at changing a policy, we will use this situation as an opportunity to reiterate the clear, scriptural teaching on sexual expression."
This is a private university, which has the right to its own rules in such matters. These self-appointed busybodies should mind their own business.
Soulforce Equality Riders?
A John Edwards group should not include the words "force" and "riders" in their name.
I hope they are as welcome as a group of Klan members at an NAACP meeting.

Don't go there if you've recently eaten.
Sickening!
I don't know what they do now, but Bob Jones used to expel students if they were caught holding hands.
Brokeback Faggie Riders! They're coming, folks!
(Come and get me, coppers)
I'll be sending off a domation check to Bob Jones University Monday. Good for them.
The next time we see an article on this subject, it will no doubt be sprinkled throughout with the letters A-C-L-U.
Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee had several of the homosexual activists arrested on the campus last week.

You mean Sen. Byrd would not be welcome at a NAACP meeting?
I guess that just lends credence to the saying, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend". Since we all know that Byrd and the NAACP both oppose conservatism. And you can throw the ACLU in there as well
Why aren't they pushing their agenda at one of the local madrassas in Michigan?
I thought not.

Unless of course they accept the Federal grants and loans awarded to students. If they do, then they are SOL when it comes to being private. Of course, the Righteous Right (not all Religeous folks) are going to be seeing their weapons used against them. Think smoking bans in private restaurants and bars......The Righteous Right applauded that trampling of private property, now they get to live with the inevitable results of that disrespect.
Good for Bob Jones. Homosexuals already have all the exact same rights as straight folks. What a waste of time.
Ex-Gay Ministries and Reparative Therapy Man holding his hands over his eyes. Some homosexual persons claim to have experienced a change in their sexual orientation. Their stories are their stories and we should not try to change them if they are sincerely happy. With that said, however, the vast majority of our brothers and sisters who are same-sex attracted entered "ex-gay ministries" or "reparative therapy" under the belief of a homosexual orientation being morally inferior and a heterosexual orientation being morally superior. Such a belief is a dangerous untruth that is used by certain religious groups to not only shame GLBT people, but to also deny them equality in society and full membership in their churches. The truth is that God created and loves gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people exactly as they are without reservation. While the people behind ex-gay ministries will rush to tell you about those in the gay community who have made unhealthy choices, they engage in deception by omission -- never speaking to the fact of all those happy, loving, faithful families that include and accept gay people. Furthermore, ex-gay ministries are opposed by every major health and mental health organization, including the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Psychological Association.
This is all untrue.
