Weaver may have correctly concluded that they were there to kill them not arrest them.

Weaver was a stand-up guy in my opinion who took the blame. He did not make this paranoid claim.

Weaver was essentially saying that, in hindsight, it would have been better to have gotten his family out. It's a natural response to having his son and wife shot dead and being trapped, wounded, in the cabin with his kids, Viki's body and his wounded friend for several days.
